Hyundai launched its fourth-generation Santa Fe in July 2018, pushing the seven-seat large SUV further upmarket with higher levels of equipment and advanced technology.

It lost the popular two-wheel-drive 3.3-litre V6 petrol option, entering showrooms with carryover four-cylinder engines with four-wheel drive – the 138kW/241Nm 2.4-litre petrol paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and 147kW/440Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel with a new eight-speed auto.

The petrol and diesel engines were available with the entry-level Active model grade, while the higher-series Elite and top-spec Highlander variants were diesel-only.

The new generation was longer, wider and taller than the previous model, bringing a bigger footprint, but the increased cabin space this liberated was only marginal.

The big news was in the significant styling changes, redesigned interior, clever convenience features and the higher level of active driver-assist safety technology.
