BF Falcon XR6, XR6T and XR8Oct 2005

BF Falcon XR6, XR6T and XR8

With the BF Falcon facelift Ford extended the appeal of its BA Falcon with a range of under-the-skin improvements, but wrought very little in the way of visual appearance upgrades. The big news came in the form of a six-speed automatic gearbox option – the German-made ZF 6HP26 unit – in lower-grade Falcons, while it was made standard in more expensive versions like the Ghia and XR8.Ford also improved the existing 4.0-litre Barra in-line six-cylinder engine powertrain.Power increased from 182kW to 190kW at 5250rpm while torque now topped out from 380Nm to 383Nm at 2500. Detailed changes decreased the engine’s noise, vibration and harshness properties while increasing fuel economy. There were also modifications to the existing Ion four-speed automatic gearbox in the rear-wheel drive models, for extra smoothness and refinement.Other changes included an increase in output for the 4.0-litre Barra 245T – now with an extra 5kW and 30Nm (245kW at 5250rpm and 480Nm at 2000rpm) – while the 5.4-litre Barra 230 V8 now offered another 10kW and 30Nm to achieve a maximum 230kW at 5350rpm and 500Nm at 3500rpm.The 156kW Barra E-Gas engine also went up slightly in torque – from to 374Nm from 372Nm.There was also greater availability of the Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, along with minor trim and equipment alterations.

BF FairmontOct 2005

BF Fairmont

With the BF range, the big news was the limited use of ZF’s six-speed automatic gearbox that helped to transform upper-end versions of the BA-based Fords into sedans with seriously world-class capabilities and value-for-money.But refinement issues were also addressed, with concerted efforts to deaden noise paths with fancy padding from the engine bay, parcel shelf, roof and other known areas that transmit it.In the Fairmont, engine choices were limited to the upgraded 190kW/383Nm 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine - mated to an improved Ion four-speed automatic - or the 230kW/500Nm 5.4-litre SOHC V8 mated to the ZF six-speed automatic transmission. As petrol prices soared, the LPG option - using a 156kW/372Nm variation of the 4.0-litre petrol engine, became available in the Fairmont from early 2006. This too uses the old Ion four-speed auto.Visually, the BF Fairmont can be distinguished from its BAII predecessor by its new front bumper, tail-lights, alloy wheel design, and revised trim.New colours were also added to the range, and there were minor trim changes inside. However, Ford was criticised for not doing more to differentiate the BF Fairmont from the BAII model.

Both were mated to the ZF six-speed automatic transmission.Visually, the BF Fairmont Ghia can be distinguished from its BAII predecessor by its new front bumper, tail-lights, alloy wheel design, and revised trim.New colours were also added to the range, and there were minor trim changes inside. However, Ford was criticised for not doing more to differentiate the BF from the BAII model

DB 380Oct 2005

DB 380

DEVELOPED as part of a $600 million new model and assembly plant upgrade program, the front-wheel drive, four-door, five-seater 380 sedan finally laid the 20-year old Magna nameplate to rest. The 380 is the Adelaide-based company’s challenge to the fleet-favourite Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Camry and Avalon. But it’s also in charge of channelling sales from the popular-with-novated leasing Honda Accord Euro, Mazda 6, Subaru Liberty and Nissan Maxima.Motivated by a new, imported 3.8-litre single cam 24-valve V6 engine, the 380 produces 175kW of power and 343Nm of torque.Mitsubishi has also prepared models engineered to run on liquid petroleum gas (LPG), especially aimed at fuel-conscious fleet buyers.Buyers can choose between a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox. All models – base, LE, LS, LX, VRX and GT – include twin front and side airbags, climate control air-conditioning, cruise control, power windows, trip computer, steering wheel audio controls, and the latest Bosch 8.0 anti-lock braking system. However there will be no 380 wagon despite there being a Magna version, as such cars’ sales in recent years have fallen victim to the continuing popularity of light and medium SUVs.

SY TerritoryOct 2005

SY Territory

The SY facelift wasn’t actually one, since visual changes were limited to new colours and trim, but a more powerful yet economical 4.0-litre engine and the inclusion of a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox in AWD models brought new refinement levels to the big Ford wagon.Power increased from 182kW to 190kW at 5250rpm while torque now topped out from 380Nm to 383Nm at 2500. Detailed changes decreased the engine’s noise, vibration and harshness properties while increasing fuel economy. There were also modifications to the existing Ion four-speed automatic gearbox in the rear-wheel drive models, for extra smoothness and refinement.Other changes include the implementation of a camera for safer reversing, new colours, and an auto-headlight function on all models. In early 2006 Ford finally announced a turbocharged Territory, fitted with a 245kW/480Nm 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine pilfered from the BF Falcon XR6T, for sale from mid-’06.It was identifiable by a large bonnet scoop for improved air-flow efficiency, redesigned 18-inch alloys, dual exhaust outlets, new colours, revised interior trim and a diamond-pattern mesh grille. Two AWD models were introduced, a Turbo and a Ghia Turbo. The May 2009 SY Territory Mark II was essentially a lightly facelifted model with minor other improvements. The key visual change was the new nose design, with a new bonnet, headlights, grille and bumper. Side mouldings and tail-lights were also new.The interior got new seat materials and other cosmetic detail changes. In addition, the TS and Ghia interiors received a choice of standard Shadow charcoal or the new Cashmere cream interior, which first debuted in the FG Falcon. The fuel consumption of RWD models was improved, thanks to a new catalytic converter, revised software calibration, improved aerodynamics and reduced kerb weight.
