The third generation Range Rover was a clean-sheet redesign, developed by then Land Rover (LR) owner BMW as its flagship 4WD.Consequently many of the engineering and drivetrain experiences that went into bringing the smaller BMW X5 to fruition underpinned the British 4x4 icon.Of course Ford purchased Land Rover during the Raneg Rover III’s gestation, so it arrived at Ford as a BMW.That means a 210kW/440Nm 4.4-litre DOHC 32V variable valve timing V8 or the 130kW/390Nm 3.0-litre DOHC 24V TDI turbo-diesel also found in earlier X5 iterations.Bigger than before, and heavier, the latter engine has quite a job hauling the Range Rover around.Both motors are connected to a five-speed automatic transmission – also Bavarian sourced. The base Range Rover is the SE TDI, followed by the HSE TDI and V8.This vehicle has a formidable on-road presence yet is actually reasonably zesty and responsive.In the realms of $100,000-plus off-roaders, the Range Rover manages to combine outstanding off-road ability with on-road ability unchallenged by any other large four-wheel drive heavyweight.And the reliability issues that dogged older Range Rovers should now be a thing of the past.

In all but one area the next generation Polo (the fourth since the mid-1970s but only the second for Australia) was as good as its predecessor was bad.Steering, handling, ride and refinement abilities soared, along with comfort, luggage space, passive and active safety attributes and body strength.But its 55kW135Nm 1.4-litre SOHC 16V four-cylinder engine’s performance struggled to keep up with that of cheaper and more efficient rivals like the Honda Jazz, Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta ranges.Plus the three and five-door styling boarded on the innocuous after the pretty pertness of the earlier Polo. After a slow start, VW has played with the models on offer.The earlier bare-bones base, S and SE nomenclature gave way to Club, Match and Elite tags from August ’03 – with an appreciable increase in features so that even the basic Club offered dual airbags, anti-lock brakes, air-conditioning, power steering and power mirrors.From August ’04 the arrival of the Polo Classic – a soberly styled four-door sedan with a big boot and a 28cm length increase – made history in Australia as the first Chinese-built car sold here.It features a version of the old Golf IV’s 74kW/148Nm 1.6-litre SOHC 16V four-cylinder engine.
