BF Falcon XR6, XR6T and XR8

With the BF Falcon facelift Ford extended the appeal of its BA Falcon with a range of under-the-skin improvements, but wrought very little in the way of visual appearance upgrades. The big news came in the form of a six-speed automatic gearbox option – the German-made ZF 6HP26 unit – in lower-grade Falcons, while it was made standard in more expensive versions like the Ghia and XR8.Ford also improved the existing 4.0-litre Barra in-line six-cylinder engine powertrain.Power increased from 182kW to 190kW at 5250rpm while torque now topped out from 380Nm to 383Nm at 2500. Detailed changes decreased the engine’s noise, vibration and harshness properties while increasing fuel economy. There were also modifications to the existing Ion four-speed automatic gearbox in the rear-wheel drive models, for extra smoothness and refinement.Other changes included an increase in output for the 4.0-litre Barra 245T – now with an extra 5kW and 30Nm (245kW at 5250rpm and 480Nm at 2000rpm) – while the 5.4-litre Barra 230 V8 now offered another 10kW and 30Nm to achieve a maximum 230kW at 5350rpm and 500Nm at 3500rpm.The 156kW Barra E-Gas engine also went up slightly in torque – from to 374Nm from 372Nm.There was also greater availability of the Tremec six-speed manual gearbox, along with minor trim and equipment alterations.

BF FairmontOct 2005

BF Fairmont

With the BF range, the big news was the limited use of ZF’s six-speed automatic gearbox that helped to transform upper-end versions of the BA-based Fords into sedans with seriously world-class capabilities and value-for-money.But refinement issues were also addressed, with concerted efforts to deaden noise paths with fancy padding from the engine bay, parcel shelf, roof and other known areas that transmit it.In the Fairmont, engine choices were limited to the upgraded 190kW/383Nm 4.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine - mated to an improved Ion four-speed automatic - or the 230kW/500Nm 5.4-litre SOHC V8 mated to the ZF six-speed automatic transmission. As petrol prices soared, the LPG option - using a 156kW/372Nm variation of the 4.0-litre petrol engine, became available in the Fairmont from early 2006. This too uses the old Ion four-speed auto.Visually, the BF Fairmont can be distinguished from its BAII predecessor by its new front bumper, tail-lights, alloy wheel design, and revised trim.New colours were also added to the range, and there were minor trim changes inside. However, Ford was criticised for not doing more to differentiate the BF Fairmont from the BAII model.

GoAuto Search Words

Search will attempt to find all articles within the system that contain any or all words you are looking for.

You can include words like "and" + "or" for boolean style searching. Some search examples as follows:

  • "Ford v8" - Results will contain the text as it appears in the search "Ford v8".
  • "Ford and v8" - Results will have both "Ford" and "v8" within its contents but may not be sequential as per previous example.
  • "Ford or Holden and v8" - Results found will contain "v8" and also contain either "Ford" or "Holden".

You may also use wildcards represented by an asterisks. For example:
