NCP10R Echo Hatch Series IIMar 2003

NCP10R Echo Hatch Series II

The only thing holding the Echo Hatch back in its early years was high pricing and low specification levels.Toyota addressed both with the very slightly facelifted Series II (look for the teardrop headlight effect in the bumper, along with new colours and revised trim).Air-con, a CD player and remote keyless entry were now included and the price dropped, but Toyota also quietly dropped the Safety Pack. When Australian NCAP crash testers got wind of this, it demoted the Echo to a two-star safety rating from three, so Toyota rectified this for the MY05 model year. The Echo’s diminutiveness and age started to also work against it in the face of newer and larger rivals from Ford (Fiesta), Mazda (2) and especially the Honda Jazz – while even the Hyundai Getz gave it a run for the money, particularly on the sales charts.Meanwhile the Echo Sedan’s styling makeover made it a more palatable proposition, but only just, while the five-door Echo Sportivo was dumped from the range.

BL SorentoFeb 2003

BL Sorento

KIA’S Sorento was a surprisingly modern and attractive four-door wagon – the first time the South Korean manufacturer entered the larger SUV market. The drivetrain is also utilised by Kia's owner Hyundai in its similar sized Terracan off-roader.The standard equipment list includes air-conditioning, ABS brakes, dual airbags, cruise control, three power sockets, remote central locking, eight-speaker CD sound system, a rear luggage cover and 16-inch alloy wheels. One thing the Sorento does miss out on is a third row seat, something many of its rivals including the Terracan offer.Mechanical specification kicks off with that quad cam V6 engine that produces 145kW at 5500rpm and a useful 295NM at 3000. Kia claims a top speed of 192km/h but has issued no other performance figures.Normally a two-wheel drive, the Sorento can be shifted "on the fly" into four-wheel drive high range or low range - while stationary - via a Nissan Pathfinder-style rotating button on the dashboard.Underpinning the drivetrain is a traditional off-roader ladder-type chassis, double wishbone front suspension and five link rear-end. Brakes are discs all-round, while the rack and pinion steering is a speed-sensitive type. The body cloaking all this measures up well against its rivals, being longer and wider - at 4567mm and 1863mm - than the Jeep Cherokee or Tribute, while its 1580mm track is wider than luxury off-roaders from Benz or BMW as well as the Ford Explorer. Height is 1810mm including the standard rood racks. From October ’04 a five-speed automatic replaced the previous four-speed auto unit.

GoAuto Search Words

Search will attempt to find all articles within the system that contain any or all words you are looking for.

You can include words like "and" + "or" for boolean style searching. Some search examples as follows:

  • "Ford v8" - Results will contain the text as it appears in the search "Ford v8".
  • "Ford and v8" - Results will have both "Ford" and "v8" within its contents but may not be sequential as per previous example.
  • "Ford or Holden and v8" - Results found will contain "v8" and also contain either "Ford" or "Holden".

You may also use wildcards represented by an asterisks. For example:

  • "Turbo*" - will find all documents that contain words like "Turbocharged", "Turbo-Diesel".
  • "Ford and v*" - Results will have both "Ford" and any word that has "V", so you may find documents about Volvo that mention Ford.

Please note: Due to the number of articles, searches may take a few moments to respond.
