Toyota Supra to race at Goodwood

THE hotly-anticipated Toyota Supra will debut in production prototype form at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK before an international on-sale date in the first half of 2019, although an Australian introduction is still yet to be confirmed.

 

Toyota Australia vice-president of sales and marketing Sean Hanley has made it clear that the car-maker is keen to bring the reborn sportscar to local showrooms however.

 

“The Supra nameplate commands enormous respect and there has been huge public interest in the development of the new model so we would like to see it on Australian roads,” he said.

 

“It’s a car that truly demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to building and selling cars that really stir the emotions and deliver superb driving excitement.”

 

Piloting the Supra prototype up the world-renowned hill climb will be Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada professional driver Herwig Daenens.

 

Though still hiding its bodywork behind a black, red and white wrap – the same colours as Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsport team – a sculpted front bumper can be glimpsed, as well as front fender vents, bulky rear haunches and a bootlip spoiler.

 

Like Supras of the past, the new Toyota coupe will be powered by a front-mounted in-line six-cylinder engine that sends power to the rear wheels, but exact output figures are yet to be disclosed.

 

When the Supra does hit public roads, expect to also see a turbocharged four-cylinder engine on also offer as the new Toyota flagship sportscar will share the same platform as the next-generation BMW Z4.
