i45May 2010

i45

The i45 was available at launch in three specifications, each powered by a new direct-injection 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that, with 148kW and 250Nm, delivered more performance than all of its rivals in the mainstream mid-size sedan segment. The sedan-only, front-wheel drive i45 landed with a higher than expected starting price that pitched it directly against Suzuki's all-new Kizashi and the recently-facelifted Mazda6.What's more, the cost of the automatic option priced the base i45 higher than the more established Ford Mondeo, Holden Epica, and Toyota Camry. A bold move for a company that had been long associated with the bargain-basement.Nevertheless, the base-spec i45 'Active' offered a generous array of standard equipment, with 16-inch alloy wheels, an alarm, a hill-holder function, a trip computer, automatic headlights, front foglights, steering wheel audio controls, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD/WMA/MP3 player with USB/iPod connectivity and a leather-clad steering wheel.Cloth/leather seat trim, wing mirror-mounted indicators, LED tail-lights, dual chromed exhaust outlets and piano black interior highlights also featured. The mid-range, automatic-only Elite variant added full leather upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, keypess entry and starting, rear parking sensors, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers and steering wheel paddle shifters.Topping the range was the (auto-only) Premium variant, adding a panoramic glass sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension with active dampers, self-dipping rear-view mirror, premium sound system and powered front seats with driver seat memory. In October 2010, the i45's 2011 upgrade improved the suspension in response to press criticism while also adding standard Bluetooth, satellite-navigation and heated front seats to the Premium model (in return for a $1000 price increase).

RukusMay 2010

Rukus

BY THE time the Rukus reached Australia, was four years into its model cycle elsewhere in the world. For that reason, although Toyota targeted young buyers, the Rukus had reached middle age before even entering the Aussie marketThe Rukus shared its wheelbase with the Corolla hatch, at 2600mm, but had an additional 40mm rear overhang and was 25mm longer overall at 4260mm.At 1645mm, the Rukus was 135mm taller than the Corolla and just 50mm short of the RAV4. At 1760mm wide, the Rukus was the same width as a Corolla but narrower than the 1815mm RAV4.The three Rukus models – ascending through grades Build 1, Build 2 and Build 3 – shared the same body and mechanical package. The 2AZ-FE alloy in-line DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine developed a peak of 123kW of power at 6000rpm and 224Nm of torque at 4000rpm and had been seen in a variety of other Toyota models including the Avensis, Camry, Corolla, RAV4 and Tarago. The Euro 4 compliant Rukus achieved an average of 8.8L/100km and emitted 208g/km CO2 and the only transmission offered was a conventional, electronically controlled four-speed automatic sending drive through the front wheels. The Rukus’ suspension was an all-coil, front MacPherson strut and rear torsion bar design with ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes while wheels were 16-inch alloys with 205/55R16 tyres. Cargo space behind the 60/40-split rear seat was 310 litres (expanding to 1331 litres with the seats down) while the tall body design allowed a SUV-like cargo area height of 855mm.Inside, the Rukus was equipped with plenty of storage space and cupholders – even including a wallet holder – plus a cargo area that provided storage space under the floor. An open lower centre console box in the Rukus Build 1 featured four stowage compartments while the Rukus Build 2 and 3 had taller console boxes fitted with a sliding armrest and also a storage compartment for rear-seat passengers.Safety features on all models included six airbags, stability and traction control and ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution.Standard equipment on the entry-level Build 1 model included air-conditioning, alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry and ignition, front-window UV cut glass, tailgate and rear door privacy glass, body-coloured exterior power mirrors, one-touch power windows, trip computer, six-speaker audio with MP3 and iPod compatibility, plus audio and cruise control steering wheel controls and fabric seat trim.Build 2 aded part-leather seats, a ‘premium’ three-spoke steering wheel (with audio and cruise control switches), ‘premium’ gearshift knob, climate-control air-conditioning and nine-speaker audio including sub woofer. Build 3 was based on Build 2 but with the addition of a power tilt-and-slide sunroof. The Rukus Build 1 had grey fabric seats while Builds 2 and 3 had grey leather.

C30 Series IIMay 2010

C30 Series II

VOLVO’S C30 fronted the new decade with a heavy dose of botox, a light diesel engine application, more standard features, and no increase in prices. The Swedes also added the DRIVe model that only just trails the Ford Fiesta Econetic as Australia’s most economical car, beating out the Toyota Prius hybrid in the process. Its 1.6-litre turbo-diesel unit joins the 2.0D four-cylinder turbo-diesel introduced in the last of the pre-facelift C30s in November 2009, which in turn usurped the old 2.4-litre D5 five-cylinder turbo-diesel that was available in the C30 since January 2008.All MY10 C30 models boast an altered front-end appearance that is meant to connect them to the newer XC60 SUV and second-generation S60 sedan due out soon.A keener eye is needed to spot the changes to the rear, which basically run to more body-coloured or contrasting painted trim in place of black plastic panels as applied to the previous C30, and a revised bumper.Inside the three-door hatch you will find invigorated hues and trims as well as a wider range of options. Getting in on the wildly successful BMW Mini’s personalisation game is one of Volvo’s main aims with the MY10 C30 makeover.Underneath the C30 gains what Volvo calls a ‘considerably sharper’ sport chassis option, with stiffer suspension and faster steering for improved dynamics. On the safety front, all cars gain Volvo’s Emergency Brake Light system that flashes the brake lights five times per second in a forceful stop. The mid-spec LE is history, leaving only the base S to use Volvo’s long-lived 125kW/230Nm 2.4-litre twin-cam 20-valve five-cylinder petrol engine – available in five-speed manual or five-speed Geartronic automatic guises. The other diesel is the 100kW/320Nm 2.0D, employing Ford’s Powershift dual-clutch transmission. Most C30 buyers choose the evergreen 169kW/320Nm 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo petrol T5 powerplant.
