120R Series PradoMar 2003

120R Series Prado

The second generation Prado, designed in Europe and built in Japan, was better than its popular mid-sized SUV predecessor in every way, boasting a bigger body, roomier and much more refined cabin, more car-like controls and significantly improved dynamics (steering, ride, handling, roadholding comfort and safety). To counteract its decision to retain the off-road benefiting separate ladder-frame chassis, Toyota implemented advanced electronic driver-aid technology like traction control, stability controls, anti-lock brakes and Hill-start assist in a package called DAT Driver-Assist Technology, for greater on-road dynamics as well as better off-road abilities.A longer wheelbase and stronger body also helped, as did new coil suspension (air-suspended in high-end versions), rack and pinion steering and a new torque-sensing centre differential. All models – GX, GXL, VX and Grande – include dual front airbags, full-time 4WD and eight seats.Engines are: 112kW/240Nm 2.7-litre DOHC 16V four-cylinder engine (GX-only, and discontinued in August ’04), mainstay 179kW/343Nm 4.0-litre DOHC 24V VVT-i (variable valve timing) V6 and 96kW/343Nm 3.0-litre SOHC 8V four-cylinder turbo-diesel.All were tied to five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearboxes until September ’04, when a mild makeover saw the introduction of a new five-speed automatic and six-speed manual gearbox, for better fuel economy and improved driveability.Improved brakes, cruise control and audio were also incorporated.TOYOTA introduced an upgrade Prado in late 2006, headlined by a new turbo-diesel engine lifted directly from the HiLux utility, plus new six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmissions.More powerful, more fuel efficient and with less emissions than the diesel it replaces, the Euro IV rated 3.0-litre common-rail direct-injection 1KD-FTV diesel offers 127kW at 3400rpm and a beefy 410Nm of peak torque between 1600rpm and 2800rpm.Minor trim and equipment upgrades rounded off the MY07 changes.

ZE OutlanderFeb 2003

ZE Outlander

MITSUBISHI’S Outlander is pitched against the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester and Nissan X-Trail set.It replaced the able but ignored Pajero iO, which seemed to small and boxy despite having better 4WD abilities than the rivals above due to its separate chassis.A five-seat, five-door wagon only, the Outlander first appeared in Japan in mid-2001 as the more conservatively styled Airtrek. The single bar grille and hooked nose we get is actually from the US model Outlander, launched there last year, but combined with the European model's interior.Outlander is based around a new car-like monocoque architecture with simple MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear.It has a viscous-coupling unit that transparently moves drive around among the four wheels and is powered by a 2.4-litre single overhead camshaft 16-valve four-cylinder engine that produces 100kW at 5000rpm and 205Nm at 2500rpm.The transmission is a four-speed automatic-only and uses Mitsubishi's familiar adapative INVECS II software, complete with a sports mode. The ZE Outlander came in two variants. The base LS includes dual airbags, air-conditioning, cruise control, lap-sash seatbelts all-round with pre-tensioners and force limiters up-front, power windows, mirrors and rear tailgate lock, remote central locking and an in-dash single CD combined with a four-speaker sound system. The flexibility of the interior is enhanced by a 60:40 split-fold second seat row and the front passenger seat can also be folded flat to enable items up to 2.4m long to be loaded. But the rear seats do not move fore-aft like some of the Outlander's rivals, nor do they tumble forward.Upgrade to the XLS and alloy wheels, front fog lights, roof rails, body coloured trim, side airbags, white faced instrumentation and clock, leather wrapped steering wheel and gearshift, a sunroof, in-dash six-stacker CD with six-speaker audio, height adjustable see-through headrests, a security blind and larger rear spoiler set it apart from the LS.Mechanically, the XLS adds ABS with EBD as standard.

ZZW30R MR2 Spyder Series IINov 2002

ZZW30R MR2 Spyder Series II

Toyota upgraded the MR2 Spyder’s controversial five-speed automated sequential shift manual with a stronger and faster six-speed variation – but there was still no regular manual model available. There were also improvements to the handling, ride and safety aspects of the tiny Toyota sports car, along with progress in comfort and fuel economy. The latter was aided by the sixth gear’s lower-rev highway cruising abilities. There were no engine changes, so the 1.8 VVTi’s outputs remained at 103kW and 170Nm.Stability control was also added, along with larger rear wheels and tyres, bigger brakes, suspension bracing for a stiffer body and chassis, and revisions to the steering response.Redesigned bumpers, new headlights and tail-lights, and minor dashboard and trim revisions are the visual giveaways to the ’03 model year MR2.The TTR Limited Edition MR2 Spyder from March 2004 added black leather interior trim, air conditioning and a TTR emblem. In April 2004 Toyota tackled the MR2 Spyder again, by stiffening the body structure again for improved crash-force dispersion, a better ride quality and improved dynamics. The suspension was also recalibrated to fit the changes, while structural alterations to the pedal box and door panels are designed to lessen respective foot and torso trauma on impact.

GoAuto Search Words

Search will attempt to find all articles within the system that contain any or all words you are looking for.

You can include words like "and" + "or" for boolean style searching. Some search examples as follows:

  • "Ford v8" - Results will contain the text as it appears in the search "Ford v8".
  • "Ford and v8" - Results will have both "Ford" and "v8" within its contents but may not be sequential as per previous example.
  • "Ford or Holden and v8" - Results found will contain "v8" and also contain either "Ford" or "Holden".

You may also use wildcards represented by an asterisks. For example:

  • "Turbo*" - will find all documents that contain words like "Turbocharged", "Turbo-Diesel".
  • "Ford and v*" - Results will have both "Ford" and any word that has "V", so you may find documents about Volvo that mention Ford.

Please note: Due to the number of articles, searches may take a few moments to respond.
