Kia puts Soul into Detroit show

Soul food: Kia says the Soul concept SUV points to future models.

Concept Kia addresses lifestyle issues for urban off-roaders

29 Dec 2005

KIA will unveil the all-new Soul concept car at next month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The Soul concept is a crossover utility vehicle with a sporty, bold look that builds on design cues from the Kia Mesa concept vehicle introduced at the 2005 Detroit show.

Visually the Soul has some traditional SUV styling cues about it with the upward curve of the C-pillar and dual exhausts.

This is complemented by a wrap-around windshield, muscular wheel flares, stylish front headlights and a sloped roofline, which are all intended to convey an “athletic attitude” for an active lifestyle.

Though small on the outside, Kia says the interior is large and practical with reconfigurable cargo space - the rear lift gate includes a unique drawer for wet or muddy items such as a wetsuit or hiking shoes.

The Soul is a five-door wagon but the rear “suicide” doors are hinged at the back to create a larger and easier entrance into the cabin.

Although the car-maker is remaining mum on the Soul making it into production, it has hinted that the concept is a clear indication of what’s in store for its future designs.
