BMW's all-new E92 3 Series Coupe has arrived Down Under in 325i and twin-turbo 335i guises, with the entry-level 323i due to arrive in by late December. Price increases over the current E46 coupe range - but so does power, performance, body stiffness and standard specifications.

Model: CLS-class

Released: Dec 2006

AMG, Mercedes' performance arm, has a new 6.2-litre V8 engine that is set to slot under the bonnet of a range of the company's vehicles. Among them will be the CLS63 AMG four-door "coupe" and the smaller CLK63 AMG coupe and convertible. In the CLS, the new V8 generates a massive 378kW.

Model: TT

Released: Dec 2006

Audi's second-generation TT coupe goes on sale in Australia in December 2006 and brings significant changes. The front-drive four-cylinder is powered by a new 147kW/280Nm direct-injection 2.0-litre turbo, while the all-wheel-drive quattro version offers a 184kW/320Nm 3.2-litre V6.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: CLK-class - CLK63 AMG

Released: Dec 2006

Mercedes' performance arm has a new flagship 6.2-litre V8 engine, which will power the big CLS63 AMG and the smaller CLK63 AMG coupe and convertible. In the CLS, the new V8 generates a massive 378kW, while it has been slightly detuned for the CLK, in which it produces only 354kW.

Model: Astra - TwinTop

Released: Dec 2006

Holden’s redesigned Astra "TwinTop" coupe-convertible will be launched in December, powered by a new 110kW/215Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder Ecotec engine, making it the first Astra to offer direct fuel-injection. The four-seater AH Astra TwinTop has a three-piece retractable hard top.

Model: Laguna - II 2.2 dCi

Released: Dec 2006

Renault unveiled its Laguna Phase II 2.2 dCi diesel at the 2006 Sydney motor show. The "reborn" Laguna is fitted with a five-speed automatic and a Euro IV emissions-compliant diesel that develops 112kW/320Nm to offer sub-6.0L/100km fuel economy.

Model: BT-50

Released: Dec 2006

Mazda's next-gen light truck will again be based on parent company Ford’s Courier utility and went on sale in December 2006. Like Ford's new Ranger, the bigger new BT-50 boasts a stronger body and suspension, and two new turbo-diesels: a 107kW/330Nm 2.5-litre and 116kW/380Nm 3.0-litre.

Model: 911 - Targa

Released: Dec 2006

Porsche will expand its stylish 911 range with the introduction of the Targa 4 and 4S in December. Both new Targa models feature permanent all-wheel drive and the Carrera 4’s distinctive 44mm wider body at the rear. The most striking feature is the large glass roof and opening rear window.

Model: Aurion

Released: Oct 2006

Codenamed 323L, Aurion will be powered exclusively by a 3.5-litre DOHC V6 that will deliver in excess of 190kW, giving it the upper hand on Ford’s BF Falcon and, possibly, Holden’s VE Commodore. Replacing Avalon, Aurion will be Toyota Australia's most serious shot at large sixes like Commodore and Falcon.

Model: Elantra - Sedan

Released: Oct 2006

Hyundai's fourth-generation Elantra sedan is available from October in four grades priced from $19,990. The Korean car-maker says it's the nation’s second most affordable five-seat model to be available with stability control – after its own Getz 1.6 hatch with the ESP-containing Protectz Pack.

Model: Cayman

Released: Oct 2006

Porsche's entry-level 180kW/273Nm 2.7-litre Cayman joins the 3.4-litre Cayman S coupe that went on sale in early 2006. The base Cayman will be priced at $118,000 - $10,400 more than the similarly-engined Boxster roadster and $30,500 less than the 3.4-litre Cayman S coupe.

Model: C6

Released: Oct 2006

Citroen's first large luxury car in more than six years arrives in October as the French maker's first $100,000 model. For $97,500, the C6 sedan comes with a huge standard specification list and a 155kW/290Nm 3.0-litre petrol V6. The 150kW/440Nm 2.7-litre twin turbo-diesel HDi V6 costs $103,500.

Make: Mitsubishi

Model: Pajero

Released: Oct 2006

Mitsubishi's all-new Pajero will be made available in both long-wheelbase five-door and, for the first time in almost a decade, short-wheelbase guises. Expect both bodystyles in showrooms from November, offering a MIVEC-improved 3.8-litre V6 and a common-rail-equipped 3.2-litre turbo-diesel.

Model: Caprice

Released: Oct 2006

The WM Statesman and Caprice will offer the same 195kW/340Nm 3.6-litre V6/five-speed auto combo as premium VE Commodore sedans, while the SS variant's 270kW/530Nm 6.0-litre Gen IV V8 (with six-speed auto) will be optional. Pricing will range between $58,990 and $69,990.

Model: Swift - Sport

Released: Oct 2006

Suzuki winds up the five-door Swift's street cred still further with the three-door Sport hatch. The Peugeot 206 GTi rival gets a stroked 92kW/148Nm 1.6-litre version of the Swift’s 74kW/133Nm 1.5-litre alloy DOHC VVT four-cylinder, plus tauter suspension and bigger 16-inch alloy wheels.

Model: Santa Fe - CRDi

Released: Oct 2006

Hyundai's stylish new Sante Fe range will be bolstered by a turbo-diesel vaiant from October. The 2.2-litre CRDi is a common-rail four-cylinder unit offering 335Nm of torque between 1800rpm and 2500rpm, and 110kW of power at 4000rpm, driving through a five-speed automatic gearbox.

Model: E-class

Released: Oct 2006

A facelifted E-class range arrives in October as the first cosmetic update of the seventh-gen Benz large carl, launched here in 2002. Expect a new grille, revised interior, a 285kW 5.5-litre V8 (for the S500) and the 380kW/630Nm 6.2-litre V8 E63 AMG to replace the E55.

Model: Falcon - BFII

Released: Oct 2006

Ford's answer to the VE Commodore, the BF MkII Falcon, goes on sale in October. Pricing and specs won't be announced until launch, but expect visual tweaks to headlights, bonnets, bumpers and grilles, plus the availability of a six-speed ZF automatic and stability control across the range.

Model: Boxster

Released: Oct 2006

Porsche has brought Boxster’s engines in line with its Cayman coupe sibling by blessing its entry-level convertible with VarioCam Plus, and its Boxster S with the 3.4-litre flat six from Cayman S. Pricing is up, at $108,800 for the Boxster five-speed manual (up $1400) and $134,600 for the Boxster S.

Model: Mazda6

Released: Oct 2006

Mazda is set to introduce a new-generation turbo-diesel engine into its Mazda6 medium car around October. The new common-rail 2.0-litre engine produces 105kW at 3500rpm and 360Nm at 2000rpm with a targeted combined fuel consumption of 6.0L/100km in six-speed manual guise.

Model: Captiva - MaXX

Released: Oct 2006

Holden's upcoming Captiva SUV range will be topped by a flagship MaXX variant based on the Opel-designed Antara - a very different car to the GM Daewoo designed Captiva itself. Two distinct 3.2-litre V6-powered models under the same nameplate will provide Ford with a serious rival for Territory.

Model: B9 Scrambler concept

Released: Oct 2006

Subaru's full-size B9 SUV is likely to be offered in two variants Down Under: five-seater or seven-seater, both with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder and both with high levels of standard specification. Prices are expected to start around $60,000.

Make: Lexus

Model: RX

Released: Oct 2006

The RX400h will be Lexus' second hybrid model, following the GS450h sedan. On sale from October, the luxury five-seat SUV combines a 157kW 3.3-litre petrol V6 with two electric motors, one for each axle. Expect a price premium over the RX350 - and a third hybrid Lexus in next year's LS600h limo.

Model: Z4 - Coupe

Released: Oct 2006

Due on sale here in October, BMW's Z4 M Coupe will be priced at $127,200 - $2300 less than the Z4 M Roadster and $2800 less than the M3 coupe, with which it shares its 252kW/365Nm 3.2-litre inline six. The Z4 3.0si Coupe is priced at $87,900 as a six-speed manual and $90,500 as a six-speed auto.

Model: Q7

Released: Oct 2006

Priced from around $85,000, Q7 is a big seven-seat wagon with 4.2-litre V8 petrol and 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel power – both with a six-speed auto, quattro all-wheel drive and leather as standard. Q7 sits on a 3002mm wheelbase that dwarfs BMW's X5, VW's Touareg and the Benz M-class.

Ferrari's all-alloy 599 GTB Fiorano is a replacement for the 550/575 series introduced a decade ago and takes the mantle of being the most powerful production Ferrari ever built. The front/mid-engined two-seater brandishes a 6.0-litre V12 punching out 462kW (620hp) at 7600rpm and 608Nm at 5600rpm.

Holden's first legitimate medium SUV, the GM Daewoo-built Captiva, aims directly at Ford's Territory and Toyota's Kluger. Expect cheaper pricing, a 169kW/297Nm 3.2-litre V6, part-time AWD, up to seven seats, three variants and a range-topper based on the Opel-designed five-seat Antara luxury SUV.

Model: XC90

Released: Oct 2006

Volvo's first ever V8 motivates the flagship of the facelifted XC90 luxury SUV range, which also comprises turbo-diesel for the first time from October. The new D5 offers 136kW/400Nm, the 4.4-litre V8 makes 232kW/440Nm and the entry-level 2.5 turbo five remains. Pricing spans $70,000 to $85,000.

Alfa Romeo launches its all-new 159 Sportwagon just a month after its donor car, the 159 medium sedan, was released in Australia - priced from $3000 more. It's powered by a 136kW/230Nm 2.2-litre four, a 191kW/322Nm 3.2-litre V6 and a 147kW/400Nm 2.4-litre 20-valve five-cylinder JTD turbo-diesel.

Ford's new-look Transit range consists of 20 different variants in vans, cab chassis and bus models that all feature updated exterior styling, revised interiors, better safety, customisation options, a more driver-friendly interior and no fewer than six new diesels and one LPG-compatible petrol engine.

Model: Commodore

Released: Aug 2006

Holden's all-new VE Commodore goes on sale in August 2006, just a month after Toyota'd redesigned Camry. Slightly larger externally but riding on a much bigger footprint, it will set new Australian-built standards for safety, refinement and ride/handling. It'll be powered by the same 3.6 V6 and a 6.0 V8 - the latter with a six-speed auto. Pricing opens at $34,490 for the Omega, which replaces Executive and continues with a four-speed auto.

Make: Alfa Romeo

Model: Brera

Released: Aug 2006

Shown in production guise for the first time at Geneva 2005, Alfa Romeo's Brera sports coupe is due on sale in Australia mid-2006. The 2+2 coupe will become the new leading light in the Alfa range with pricing from around $60,000. The four-cylinder JTS went on sale in June, with the V6 here from August.

Model: Golf - R32

Released: Aug 2006

The Golf range will be capped off in August by the range-topping R32 replacement, this time as a full-time member of the Golf line-up and available in both three and five-door bodystyles. The new R32 features 4Motion AWD and a 184kW/320Nm 3.2-litre V6 to out-power the muscular Golf GTI.

Released: Aug 2006

A new-generation oil-burning V6 will continue VW’s turbo-diesel inroads from August, when its Touareg 4WD becomes available with the same 171kW/500Nm 3.0-litre TDI engine that will kick-off Audi’s new Q7 4WD range at about $85,000 from October.

Dodge's Caliber hatchback will return the 90-year-old nameplate to Australia for the first time since the 1970s. Built on an all-new front-drive platform and powered by a 2.0-litre or 2.4-litre four-cylinder, it will pitch Dodge straight into the biggest sales segment in Australia, the surging small-car market.

Released: Jul 2006

Debuting at Geneva 2005, 159 is the all-new replacement for Alfa's popular 156 medium sedan and takes on the "9"-suffix applied to a family of new GM-platformed models. Featuring both front and all-wheel drive, 159 will be styled by ItalDesign and feature revised engines, including a Holden-built V6.

Released: Jul 2006

Camry becomes due for replacement in Australia in July. The new four-cylinder-only Camry, Toyota's most important domestic and export model, will be clothed in a new set of globally appealling clothes, which were revealed at the 2006 Detroit show in January.

Model: Caddy - MPV

Released: Jun 2006

Based on the Golf, the seven-seater Caddy Life will give VW a representative in the mini-MPV market for the first time. It will be powered by either a 75kW/148Nm 1.6 petrol or a 77kW/250Nm 1.9-litre TDI engine, with five-speed manual or sixspeed DSG transmissions, for under $30,000.

Released: Mar 2006

Suzuki will use the Concept S2 convertible show car as the styling inspiration for the next-generation Swift four-seater convertible due in early '06. Expect a high-performance 1.6-litre, sequential six-speed manual and maybe even AWD.

Model: V30

Released: Mar 2006

Volvo will produce its first small car since the 440. Said to closely resemble Volvo's Safety Concept Car (pictured) and likely to be based on the Ford Fiesta, the all-new V30 will rival German heavyweights like Golf, A3 and BMW's new 1 Series. The three and five-door hatch will be 400mm shorter than S40.

Released: Mar 2006

Porsche will unveil a coupe version of the second-generation Boxster convertible, to be named Cayman, at the 2005 Frankfurt show, with the production version likely to arrive here in early 2006. Positioned between Boxster S and the flagship 911, it will feature a 217kW 3.4-litre boxer engine.

Model: C50

Released: Mar 2006

Volvo is keen to deliver a successor for the now defunct C70 coupe/convertible ASAP, renamed the C50. Likely to undercut the C70 on price, the folding metal roofed four-seater will be styled by Pininfarina and use underpinnings from the S40/V50/Mazda3/Focus, with all-wheel drive as standard.
