The Hot S60 is based on the standard T6 AWD R-Design sedan and fitted with a number of locally fitted performance tweaks including an engine software upgrade from Volvo’s motorsport partner Polestar, increasing power and torque to 242kW (up 18kW) and 480Nm (up 40Nm). German tuning house Heico supplies unique 19-inch alloy wheels and a sports exhaust system.

Model: Defender - 2.2 Diesel

Released: Dec 2011

The venerable Land Rover Defender will get a new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine, upgraded brakes, interior tweaks and additional option packs as part of a MY2012 update. The smaller engine has the same power, torque, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions statistics as the outgoing 2.4 but can be made Euro 5 compliant with the addition of a particulate filter.

The next-generation Camry will debut in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2011, with a fuel economy improvement of 4.5 per cent from the new locally made ‘AR’ 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a hybrid to follow in 2012.

Honda's CR-Z coupe has been confirmed as the world’s first hybrid vehicle to come with a six-speed manual transmission. It will be mated to a derivation of the Insight’s mild-hybrid drive system, which combines a 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol engine with an electric motor.

Model: C4

Released: Nov 2011

Citroen’s conservatively redesigned small car is 50mm longer, 20mm wider and 30mm taller than the boldly-styled outgoing model. Featuring the French maker’s automatic transmission substitute, the Electronic Gearbox System (EGS), the new C4 will be powered by Citroen’s new ‘micro-hybrid e-HDi’ powertrains, which incorporate an idle-stop system to reduce CO2 emissions.

The convertible version of the Mk6 Golf is set to return to the VW range for the first time since 2002. The cabriolet will feature a folding canvas roof which will differentiate it from the brand’s flagship Eos range. A local release in late 2011 is likely.

Land Rover's Evoque will be a smaller, more fuel-efficient entry-level SUV model based on three-door LRX concept, targeting BMW's X1 and Audi’s proposed three-door Q3. It will emerge in late 2011 with a choice of three or five doors, powered by petrol, diesel and eventually, diesel-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

Australia’s version of the facelifted Soul will do without the new LED lighting and – instead of a new direct-injection engine – will be powered by a new 2.0-litre ‘Nu’ MPI petrol engine producing 119kW and 194Nm. The new look includes updated headlights, bonnet, front and rear bumpers, trim and enhanced interior features for a more premium feel.

The Aston Martin One-77 is claimed to be the most expensive car in the world – costing approximately $4 million. Only 77 examples will be built. All body panels are sculpted by hand from aluminium sheet and the interior tailored for each of its 77 owners. Power is by a 7.0-litre 522kW V12 engine.

Make: Skoda

Model: Yeti

Released: Oct 2011

The Yeti compact SUV is expected to be Skoda’s key model for sales volume. To be priced in the high-$20,000s against rivals such as the Toyota RAV4, the Volkswagen Tiguan-based Yeti will include 77TSI 2WD petrol and 103TDI AWD diesel versions, when it arrives in the third quarter of 2010, with a petrol AWD variant on the wish-list for local arrival in 2012.

The 2011 Voyager gets new front-end styling and an upgraded cabin. A new 210kW/350Nm 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 replaces the current 3.8-litre V6 and will be matched exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission. The current 2.8-litre turbo-diesel option should continue alongside.

At $440,200 the Panamera Turbo S represents a $68,000 price premium over the all-wheel drive Panamera Turbo on which it is based. That buys the most powerful version ever seen of Porsche's 4.8-litre petrol V8, producing 410kW and 750Nm outputs (increasing to 800Nm for short bursts in ‘overboost’ mode). The result is a sprint to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds.

A scowling new face and other cosmetic exterior and interior tweaks will be the most obvious changes to Jaguar's 5 Series rival. Refinement will be improved and a new four-cylinder diesel engine producing 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque will combine with a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission in Jaguar's eco-XF. Revised XFR flagship to appear as well.

BMW's bigger and more upmarket – but still rear-wheel drive – 1 Series hatchback will go on sale in Australia in October with an all-turbo engine range mated to an optional first-in-class ZF eight-speed automatic option for the three models available from launch. A raft of high tech fuel-saving measures are also set to be included.

Revamped compact-SUV arrives less than three years after the release of the current first generation model. Styling has been updated to match the rest of the VW range, with pricing and spec details yet to be announced.

Released: Oct 2011

Production delays mean that Toyota's crucial bigger and more efficient new third-generation Yaris will not arrive here until October. An efficient 1.3-litre engine with optional Super CVT-i geabox is the most likely powerplant. The new Yaris sedan, which is yet to appear, will follow the two new Yaris hatch models into showrooms some time next year.

Model: Barina

Released: Sep 2011

The redesigned Barina hatch and sedan will go on sale here around the same time, featuring quality interior materials. Confirmed for the European version (called Chevrolet Aveo) are 52 and 64kW 1.2-litre, 75kW 1.4-litre and 86kW 1.6-litre petrol engines, with the latter two available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Expect Schreyer styling and even more economical engines, possibly including a hybrid, for the third generation of Kia's light car. First to arrive will be a five-door hatch with a sedan variants to follow in Q1 2012, with a three-door price leader following the sedan by mid-2012.

All-new bodywork from the A-pillar forward, including a revised front bumper, grille, fresh bonnet and new front quarter panels mark out the revised HiLux. No changes wil be made to the outputs of petrol and turbo-diesel engine range but Australia’s top-selling utility range will be fitted as standard with anti-lock braking and electronic stability control (ESC) technologies.

200 examples of the 35th anniversary Golf GTI will make it to Oz. Peak power and torque of 173kW/300Nm are 18kW and 20Nm up on the standard GTI, reducing the 0-100 run from 6.9 seconds to 6.6. Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, dark-tinted tail-lights, '35' badges, unique 18-inch alloys and more aggressive side skirts mark out the special GTI.

The new longer, roomier Jetta will be sourced from VW’s North American plant in Puebla, Mexico. Similar engine and transmission packages to the Golf on which it is based are likely although VW is keen to distance the Jetta from being just a Golf sedan – it claims that the design has shifted so far from Golf that the new Jetta is “just as independent as a CC or Tiguan”.

The third-generation Focus will be sleeker, more upmarket and packed with technology. Three four-cylinder engines will be on offer from launch, with 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol units plus a 2.0-litre TDCi four-cylinder turbo-diesel available across Ambiente, Trend, Sport and Titanium trim levels.

Mercedes-Benz claims it will establish new safety standards for open-top sports cars with its third-generation SLK. The styling is understood to be inspired by the gullwing-bodied SLS supercoupe. Driver assistance systems will include the standard fitment of drowsiness detection and the optional availability of accident prevention systems that can apply the brakes autonomously.

Model: 1 Series - M Coupe

Released: Aug 2011

The 1 Series M Coupe will provide a high level of standard equipment as well as improved dynamics, including an an extra 25kW of power and 50Nm of torque over the 135i Sport’s acclaimed 3.0-litre turbo six. The six-speed manual-equipped 1 Series M Coupe will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds – the same as the manual M3 sedan.

Updated styling and the French brand’s fuel-saving ‘e-HDI’ idle-stop and regenerative braking technology, a 25kg weight loss and ultra-low rolling resistance tyres, the hatch, wagon and coupe-convertible 308 range will also gain more technology to help keep it competitive. The coupe-convertible will arrive a couple of months after the hatch and wagon.

Mercedes-Benz will replace the ageing CLC in Australia with a sexy new C-class coupe. The new car is expected to be a more premium product and therefore cost more but Mercedes insists that it will be attractively priced. The new coupe will be introduced at the same time as a mid-life facelift for the C-class range.

Featuring the ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language that debuted with the ix35 SUV and i45 mid-size sedan, the Accent sedan will form a more upmarket sibling to Hyundai's i20 hatch in the light-car segment. Hyundai pulled a surprise at AIMS by announcing a hatch variant would sell alongside the sedan model as well.

The upgraded C5 represents a midlife makeover for the French brand’s mid-size sedan and wagon range. Citroen will stick with 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel variants for both the C5 sedan and Tourer in Australia.

The Panamera Hybrid is likely to come with the same hybrid drive system as the current Cayenne Hybrid - which runs Audi’s 245kW/440Nm supercharged 3.0-litre petrol V6, assisted by a 37kW/300Nm electric motor, fuelled by a 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery under the floor of the cargo area.

Audi claims fuel consumption has been cut 19 per cent across its new A6 range, trimming fat with increased aluminium content and more efficient powertrains including a petrol-electric hybrid from 2013. It will be packed full of safety, comfort and convenience-enhancing technology.

Volkswagen's redesigned 2011 Touareg will carry more safety, refinement, technology and features, but significantly less weight for improved efficiency and better driveability. The new CLS presents a new design direction for the German luxury brand. The Kia Sportage gets an upgrade just eight months after its local launch, with an across-the-board price increase of $230 balanced out by more standard equipment including (depending on the variant) standard rubber mats, new seat trim and bigger brake discs.

The Mondeo's 118kW 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine will be replaced in mid-spec Zetec and luxury Titanium hatch variants for a 149kW/300Nm version of Ford’s new EcoBoost 2.0-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol four. Combined with a dual-clutch six-speed Powershift gearbox the new drivetrain is claimed to improve average fuel consumption by 16 per cent to eight litres per 100km.

Hyundai’s new Elantra small sedan will go on sale here in the third quarter of 2011, with styling based on the larger i45 sedan's fresh ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. Also expect a new 1.6-litre direct-injection petrol four, with six-speed transmissions.

Model: Grand Cherokee - CRD

Released: Jun 2011

3.0-litre V6 turbo CRD to join Grand Cherokee range here in June. Produces 177kW and 550Nm, while consuming a combined-cycle 8.3L/100km and emitting 218g/km of CO2. Pricing is yet to be finalised but the diesel engine option is expected to cost around the same as the Hemi V8, which costs $60,000 in Limited guise.

Released: May 2011

Updated Eos will bring the styling into line with the rest of the 2011 VW range. The four-seater folding hardtop will feature drive-trains and interior components from the Mk6 Golf, as well as hill start assist. Prices are unchanged, starting at $46 990 for the 103TDI and $48 990 for the 155TSI. It is scheduled for a mid-2011 release.

Top-selling mid-sized sedan and wagon will feature new driver assistance systems, including an undated telematics platform with internet access. New engines with idle-stop technology and an improved 7G Automatic transmission will improve fuel consumption by up to 31 percent. There will also be subtle styling changes and a newly-designed interior. Arrival is scheduled for mid-2011.

Volkswagen has had a change of heart and decided that the Golf BlueMotion will now be coming to Australia. It promises to be the most economical vehicle of its size in Australia, edging out the latest Toyota Prius in the combined fuel consumption average stakes by the smallest of margins – 3.8L/100km against the petrol-electric hybrid’s 3.9L/100km figure.

Model: MP4-12C

Released: May 2011

McLaren is preparing to launch a smaller, lighter and more nimble successor for its F1 supercar launched in the early 1990s. The McLaren MP4-12C will be V8-powered, aimed directly at Ferrai's new 458 and the Mercedes-AMG SLS super-coupe.

Model: Continental - GT

Released: May 2011

Retaining its familiar silhouette, the revised GT will be wider and some body panels will be created in one piece of aluminium using a high-tech 'super-forming' process that eliminate seams and welding.

Expect more power and torque from the big 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 plus an all-new 4.0-litre V8 to join the range later.

Model: GranTurismo - MC Stradale

Released: May 2011

The racetrack-ready GranTurismo MC Stradale will be more expensive than the $318,500 GranTurismo S coupe upon which it is based. Lighter in weight and offering a more powerful 336kW version of the 4.7-litre Ferrari-derived V8 that powers the standard GranTurismo, the MC is likely to complete the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.5 seconds, easily making it the quickest Maserati production car.

Model: Passat

Released: Apr 2011

Volkswagen is going high-tech with the redesigned Passat and offering trickle-down luxuries from its higher models plus safety gadgets such as automatic emergency braking and fatigue detection. The BlueMotion model will consume a hybrid-like 4.2L/100km, emit just 109g/km of CO2 and have a theoretical tank range of more than 1600km.

Renault's new flagship will replace the slow-selling Laguna. Possibly built in South Korea alongside the third-generation Samsung SM5 sedan on which it is based, it is expected to come with many comfort features including dual-mode air ioniser with fragrance diffuser, triple-zone climate-control, a massaging driver’s seat, Bose premium audio and hands-free phone connectivity.

The facelifted Jazz could be released here with 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre four-cylinder engines, the latter available with an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT). The top-spec Jazz is likely to be offered with optional leather upholstery and a number of other premium touches like chromed ings for the air-vents, instruments, climate controls and dashboard.

The MY2011 GT-R will represent a traditional midlife makeover to boost the relevance of Nissan's flagship sportscar. It will feature an engine upgrade to produce 33kW and 24Nm more than the outgoing model plus even more technology to further improve handling plus a reduction in fuel consumption.
