BMW Australia will soon widen the appeal of its new M3 coupe with the addition of the M3 convertible. Likely to carry a traditional price premium ($16,000 in E46 guise) over the new M3 coupe, it will come with the same 309kW 4.0-litre V8, mated to six-speed manual or M-DCT auto transmissions.

Model: Cayenne - Turbo S

Released: Dec 2008

Porsche premiered its new Cayenne Turbo S at the 2008 Beijing motor show. The S version of Porsche’s super-SUV packs a host of performance enhancements including a 404kW/750Nm 4.8-litre direct-injection twin-turbo V8, making the Turbo S the most powerful Porsche available.

Model: 3 Series

Released: Dec 2008

BMW’s facelifted 3-Series gains a relatively minor makeover. Changes include subtle headlight, bonnet, bumper and tail-light treatments. Inside higher quality cabin trim and improved iDrive system are included. The 335i Coupe and Convertible models gain BMW’s new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Model: ForTwo - mhd

Released: Dec 2008

The Smart ForTwo micro car will be offered with fuel-saving stop/start technology from late 2008. Dubbed micro hybrid drive (MHD), it replaces the starter motor with a generator, which also supplys the electrical system with voltage. Fuel consumption is down from 4.7L/100km to 4.4L/100km

Model: 3 Series - sedan

Released: Dec 2008

The first M3 sedan is likely to arrive in Australia by December 2008. Powered by the same 309kW 4.0-litre V8 as its coupe and cabriolet stablemates, the four-door M3 will compete head on with the likes of Mercedes-Benz's bruising new C63 AMG sedan and the Lexus IS-F sedan due here in October.

Make: Mazda

Model: Mazda6 - MZR-CD turbo-diesel

Released: Dec 2008

Mazda will add turbo-diesel power to its Mazda6 hatch and wagon range by the end of 2008. The diesel Six's all-new 136kW/400Nm 2.2-litre common-rail direct-injection four-cylinder engine, with manual transmission only, is capable of returning 5.9L/100km. Pricing is expected to start under $40,000.

Model: Impreza - WRX sedan

Released: Dec 2008

Subaru will launch a new WRX sedan and upgraded hatch to its Impreza range late 2008 With more power and revised suspension tune, both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback guises, gain 26kW more power – for maximum outputs of 195kW – with better claimed fuel efficiency.

Model: 911

Released: Dec 2008

Having released the facelifted C2/C2S 911 in September 2008, Porsche will also launch upgraded versions of its all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4/S Coupe/Cabriolet range. The will feature the same new direct-injction enines and PDK uto transmissins as the rear-drive Carrera and Cabriolet models.

Model: Berlingo

Released: Dec 2008

Citroen is expected to launch its all-new Berlingo small commercial van here in late 2008. Initially to be available as a diesel only, with a petrol variant to follow, the new Berlingo will come in both short and long-wheelbase guises and will be sold beside the smaller existing Berlingo until around mid-2009.

Model: Defender

Released: Dec 2008

Land Rover will release a limited-edition Defender SVX model in the fourth quarter of 2008, commemorating the British 4WD brand’s 60th anniversary this year. Australia will take the 110 Station Wagon only, featuring unique seats, wheels, graphics, colour and minor frontal styling changes.

Model: Phantom - Coupe

Released: Nov 2008

Rolls-Royce revealed its new Phantom coupe at the 2008 Geneva motor show as the fourth bodystyle to emerge from the BMW-developed Phantom range. The two-door mega-coupe features the same hand-made aluminium chassis and 338kW/720Nm 6.75-litre V12, and goes on sale here in late 2008.

Model: Brooklands

Released: Nov 2008

Bentley unveiled its potent Brooklands grand touring coupe at the Geneva motor show. The four-seat luxury cruiser replaces the Continental R coupe and is expected on sale locally in late 2008. The big two-door runs the most powerful Bentley engine yet, a 395kW/1050Nm twin-turbo 6.75-litre V8.

Model: IS - IS-F

Released: Nov 2008

A stonking V8-powered IS sedan will mark the Toyota luxury division’s first challenge to BMW’s M, Audi's RS and Mercedes-Benz’s AMG high-performance brands. Named IS-F but also known as the IS500, it'll offer a 317kW 5.0-litre V8, mated to an eight-speed auto.

Model: A5 - 3.0 TDI

Released: Nov 2008

Audi is expected to introduce a 3.0 TDI (turbo-diesel) quattro (all-wheel drive) variant to its A5 coupe model range in the fourth quarter of 2008. With some 176kW/500Nm driving through a standard tiptronic transmission, it will be priced at between $90,000 and $95,000 when it finally gets here.

Model: Continental - Flying Spur

Released: Nov 2008

Bentley has given its Continental Flying Spur sedan an extensive facelift that comprises a host of cosmetic, refinement and ride quality upgrades, and introduces a second model variant in the new 600hp Speed flagship. The improved Flying Spur range is due on sale locally from November.

Model: A4 - Avant

Released: Nov 2008

Audi will add a 105kW/320Nm 2.0 TDI to the A4 Avant range line-up in late 2008. The 2.0 TDI is expected to deliver a fuel consumption of 6.0L/100km, and a C02 output of159g/km. Only one transmission - the multitronic CVT with sport program and eight speeds - will be offered.

Model: A6 - Avant

Released: Nov 2008

Audi 2008 RS6 Audi's 426kW/650Nm twin-turbocharged direct-injection V10 RS6 wagon is expected in local showrooms in late 2008. Originally borrowed from Lamborghini's Gallardo for the S8 and S6 sedans, the force-fed V10 is Audi's answer to the M5's atmo V10.

Released: Nov 2008

PEUGEOT’S cute 107 is firming as a potential light car challenger in the Australian market, with a possible local introduction late 2008. Co-developed with Citroen and Toyota, the 107 is available in either three-door or five-door variants. Two Engine options include a 50kW/94Nm 1.0-litre and 55kW/130Nm 1.4-litre guises.

Model: B-Class

Released: Oct 2008

Mercedes-Benz will introduce a facelifted B-class range in October 2008. Featuring a new metallic-finish three-bar grille and lower bumper, and body coloured wing mirrors. Mechanically, the big news is that all four-cylinder engines will use up to 7 percent less fuel and produce even lower emissions.

Model: Tourer

Released: Oct 2008

Holden Special Vehicles will produce its own version of Holden's upcoming Sportwagon, with sales commencing in October. Based on the ClubSport R8, the HSV Tourer will come powered by a 6.2-litre V8 delivering 317kW. This will be HSV's first wagon since the Holden Adventra-based Avalanche.

Toyota revealed its facelifted HiLux range at the 2008 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Apart from a new trapezoidal grille with grey bar and wider-mouthed front bumper, the upgraded Hilux includes a range of minor mechanical, safety and equipment upgrades.

MITSUBISHI’S first bona-fide WRX hunter, the turbocharged, all-wheel drive Lancer Ralliart will compete directly with Subaru’s cult-hero. It's powered by a detuned 2.0-litre DOHC MIVEC turbocharged four-cylinder, producing 177kW, mated to Mitsubishi’s Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST).

Model: Yaris

Released: Oct 2008

Toyota’s Yaris facelift features interior and exterior cosmetic upgrades. While existing sheetmetal is unaltered a restyled grille, larger air dam, and new headlamps complete Yaris’s new nose job. The rear incorporates new tail lights lens and a rear bumper revamp, incorporating a larger number-plate valance.

Model: Megane - Renault Sport dCi

Released: Oct 2008

Renault Australia will add a higher-performance diesel variant to its Megane five-door hatch range in October. The Megane Renault Sport dCi features a 2.0-litre common-rail turbo-diesel delivering 127kW of power and 360Nm of torque, with combined cycle fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km.

Model: M-class

Mercedes-Benz's facelifted M-Class includes subtle front-end styling changes to the headlights and reshaped grille. At the rear tail-lights have a smoked glass look. M-class models continue with a range of five V6 and V8 diesel and petrol engines all linked to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Mercedes-Benz has taken the covers off its facelifted A-class. With significant mechanical upgrades, such as the adoption of a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. The compact car picks up revised front and rear lighting, front bumpers and a reworked grille.

Lexus is expected to launch its upgraded IS250 range locally in the last quarter of 2008. With minor cosmetic changes to the front and rear fascia’s, ie headlamp, grille, and bumper areas. Mechanical upgrades to its 2.5 litre engine will be minimal.

The redesigned A4 sedan will adopt additional three new drivetrains to its range, by late 2008. A 2.0 TFSI with multitronic or quattro with manual transmissions, and a 3.0 TDI turbo Diesel with Tiptronic transmission only. The B8-series A4 sedan represents Audi's best chance to emulate BMW's successful 3 Series sedan.

Model: Grandeur

Hyundai Australia has given its struggling Grandeur large car a minor upgrade and also added a new turbo-diesel engine to the range. Joining the 3.8-litre petrol V6, the 2.2-litre turbo-diesel delivers 114kW/343Nm and is mated to a five-speed automatic. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.9L/100km.

Model: A4 - Avant

Released: Sep 2008

Audi’s new A4 Avant is larger and lighter than the model it replaces. Based on the same platform as the sedan, it benefits from a new five-link front axle and longer wheelbase, giving the Avant a class leading 1430 litres luggage capacity. The Avant will be available in a range of petrol and turbo diesel engines.

Peugeot Automobiles Australia scored a major coup with the global public debut of the 308 Touring at the 2008 Melbourne show. The 308 Touring features a standard panoramic glass roof that is 27 per cent larger than its 307 wagon predecessor's, extending beyond the second row.

Model: Cooper - JCW Hardtop and Clubman

Released: Sep 2008

Billed as the most powerful production Mini ever built, the latest John Cooper Works (JCW) version of the iconic Cooper S will be priced from $48,800. Featuring a 155kW iteration of the BMW Group’s 1.6-litre twin-scroll turbo four, the JCW Cooper will be available in both hatchback and Clubman wagon guise.

CHRYSLER is embarking on a two-model people-mover assault with the launch of the Journey. Dubbed a CUV Crossover Utility Vehicle, the Journey is based on Chrysler’s mid-sized Sebring platform. With a sub-$50,000 presence in the seven seater SUV segment, will allow the Grand Voyager to edge upmarket.

Model: Barina

Released: Sep 2008

GM Holden’s updated Barina hatch is expected here in late-2008. Far from all-new, the exterior brings a new front-end with a split grille, curved clear-lens headlights similar to the Epica medium sedan, clear-lens tail-lights and a revised interior. Barina currently offers a 77kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder.

Model: 911 - C2/C2S/C4/C4S coupe and cabrio

Released: Sep 2008

Porsche's facelifted 911 range should adopt direct-injection engines and a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. All-wheel-drive models will come fitted with a standard limited-slip differential. The exterior gains restyled front and rear bumpers, LED daytime running lights and redesigned tail-lights.

Renault Oz will release the compact Koleos crossover, which was unveiled at the 2006 Paris motor show as the French brand's first SUV, in Australia in September. Designed at the Renault Samsung Motors Design Centre in South Korea, it shares the same part-time 4WD platform as Nissan's MkII X-Trail.

Citroen will unveil the all-new C5 internationally at the 2008 Paris motor show. Rumoured to be roomier, it should come with stylistic elements from Citroen’s well-received C-SportLounge concept car. The MkII C5 will be offered in five-door hatchback (dubbed sedan) and wagon guises.

Mercedes-Benz has added a new acronym to its model range with the introduction of the CLC – the replacement for the C-class Sports Coupe. Incorporating a wedge-shaped styling clearly linking the C-class front-end. Likely to include diesel, supercharged four-cylinder petrol and even V6 options.

Model: Colorado

Released: Aug 2008

Holden will relaunch its Rodeo range as the Colorado in July via a cosmetically facelifted model that is now on sale in Thailand as the Chevrolet Colorado. Featuring a new front bumper and interior trim, it will swap the Chev bow-tie logo on its grille for Holden’s lion mascot.

Model: Clio - RenaultSport

Released: Aug 2008

Renault used the 2005 Geneva motor show to take the covers off its new Clio RenaultSport hatch. Due on sale in Australia mid 2008, the hot Clio is powered by a 147kW/215Nm 2.0-litre 16-valve four-cylinder. In close-ratio six-speed manual guise it races to 100km/h in a claimed 6.9 seconds.

Model: Epica - Diesel

Released: Aug 2008

Holden is expected to launch a diesel-powered Epica by late 2008. The mid-sized sedan's 2.0-litre common-rail diesel is also used in the Captiva SUV. Developed jointly by GM Daewoo and GM Powertrain, it delivers 110kW/320Nm.

Released: Aug 2008

Evolution, not revolution, is the theme for the second-generation Jazz five-door hatch launched at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Featuring a completely new body and interior, the Jazz is likely to be offered with revised 1.3 and 1.5-litre engines. Australian sales are expected to commence in late 2008.

Volkswagen has taken the wraps off its most potent ‘R’ model yet – the Passat R36. Tipped to go on sale in both sedan and wagon form here in the third quarter of 2007, the R36 employs a new 225kW 3.6-litre FSI V6, paired with a six-speed DSG gearbox channelling drive to all four wheels.

SUZUKI will launch a facelifted Grand Vitara range in August 2008. Changes will include revised headlamps, tail lamps, grille, bumper and wheels. Power will be via upgraded Petrol and Diesel engines.

Released: Aug 2008

The TTS Roadster and coupe are the first S-badged TT models to be released by Audi. With standard quattro all-wheel drive, a 200kW/350Nm 2.0 TSFI engine with the choice of S tronic or manual transmissions, and stainless steel design details. Expect the TTS here by mid-2008 in both coupe and roadster guises.

Model: Lancer - Evolution X

Released: Jul 2008

The new Evo X Lancer will feature an improved high-performance 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine with a close-ratio six-speed manual or an Audi DSG-style dual-clutch automatic. Expect the same length as the current car but with a longer wheelbase, plus the Sportback concept's aggressive front-end design.

Released: Jul 2008

The new Audi A3 Cabriolet boasts a semi-automatic lightweight soft-top which opens in just nine seconds. The car will be available in several engine variants including a 1.6-litre manual, 1.8 TFSI S tronic and 2.0 TFSI manual and S tronic variants. The Audi A3 Cabriolet should be launched third quarter-2008.

Model: SL-class - SL63 AMG

Released: Jul 2008

Mercedes Benz-AMG division launched two models that will top the revised SL range. The SL65 AMG and SL63 AMG both feature new front masks. The SL63 AMG replaces the S55K and offers 386kW/630Nm, while the range-topping SL65 AMG continues with a 450kW/1000Nm twin-turbocharged V12.

Model: X6

Released: Jul 2008

BMW’s new E71-coded X6 "crossover" will incorporate sedan, coupe and SUV bodystyles, all in one. BMW refers to it as a Sports Activity Coupe. Based on the second-generation X5, it will be built alongside the luxury SUV in the US. A hybrid version, called the E72, is also expected within 18 months.

Model: RX-8

Released: Jul 2008

Revealed at the 2008 Detroit show, the facelifted RX-8 sports restyled front and rear bumpers, a bolder grille, upgraded front and rear lights, and new five-spoke alloy wheels. The more aggressive styled RX-8 also gains a new six-speed automatic transmission for the first time.

Model: X-Trail - Diesel

Released: Jul 2008

Nissan will offer a diesel-powered X-Trail in late July. Developed with Renault. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine will be available in two specifications: an entry-level 110kW/320Nm engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and a more powerful 127kW/360Nm iteration matched to a six-speed manual.

Holden's Commodore wagon will be the last of the VT-based Commodore range to be replaced with a VE version, following the short-wheelbase sedans and long-wheelbase (Statesman/Caprice) sedans launched in 2006, and the utes in 2007. Expect sharp pricing, stying and big space.

Model: W427 - Supercar

Released: Jul 2008

HSV revealed at the 2008 Melbourne International Motor Show what it said could be the fastest road-registrable vehicle ever built in Australia: the W427 Supercar. So-called due to its employment of the Corvette’s 7.0-litre (427 cubic-inch) LS7 V8, developing in excess of 370kW/640Nm.

Make: Hyundai

Model: Sonata

Released: Jun 2008

Hyundai hopes to shake up the medium-sized sedan segment with a revised Sonata range due mid-year. Featuring fresh exterior and interior styling updates, the range will include a new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine generating 110kW and 305Nm and achieving fuel economy of 6.0L/100km.

Honda's new-generation Accord Euro was launched at the Geneva motor show in both sedan and wagon forms. Complete with evolutionary styling, it is significantly wider and lower than its predecessor. Power is via a revised 2.4-litre 147kW/233Nm petrol engine.

Model: F430 - Scuderia

Released: Jun 2008

Ferrari's fastest-ever production car, the F430 Scuderia, will finally land mid 2008, with a provisional price of $550,000. Powered by a 375kW 4.3-litre, naturally aspirated V8, and linked to the F1-SuperFast2 automated manual gearbox, the Scuderia peels away from rest to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds.

Make: Jaguar

Model: X-Type

Released: Jun 2008

Seven years after it first emerged, Jaguar's compact X-Type won't be replaced but given a facelift involving 500 new components. Due here mid-year, the MY09 X sedan's base (2.1 LE) pricing remains unchanged at $53,990, the 2.2D LE costs $55,490 and V6 AWD prices start at $70,000.

Released: Jun 2008

Renault will introduce entry-level and up-spec versions of its latest, X85-series Clio light car range into Australia after all, to replace the discontinued X65 Clio models. Both petrol and dCi turbo-diesel are expected to be offered. A wagon version will also be on the agenda .

Previewed at the 2008 Melbourne International Motor Show were the performance-enhanced FPV versions of the Blue Oval’s vital new homegrown large-car, the FG Falcon - in new GT, F6 and Super Pursuit Ute guises. All-important performance figures won't be divulged until closer to launch in June.

Make: Saab

Model: 9-3

Released: Jun 2008

Saab will introduce all-wheel drive variants of its 9-3 range by mid 2008, for its V6 Turbo sedan and wagon models. Powered initially by a 206kW/400Nm V6 model called Turbo XWD (cross-wheel drive). Saab claims that its Haldex AWD system will put Saab at the cutting edge of AWD technology.

Model: SLK-class

Released: Jun 2008

Mercedes-Benz is set to launch a facelifted SLK range in June, featuring standard heated seats, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and Parktronic parking sensors on all SLK models, plus the option of factory-fitted manual lumbar adjustment. Lowered sports suspension will be a no-cost option.

BMW is expected to debut its long-awaited M Double-Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) automated manual gearbox on its M3 Coupe by mid-2008. Quicker and more frugal than the manual, with claimed 0-100km/h acceleration dropping two-tenths, it also slashes average fuel consumption by half a litre per 100km.

Volkswagen’s Golf-based Tiguan compact SUV arrives in May. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel 103TDI will be priced at $35,990 (plus $2300 for a six-speed auto) and the 2.0-litre petrol-engined 147TSI auto at $42,990. In the third quarter comes the detuned petrol 125TSI, priced from $33,990 ($36,290 auto).

A CVT auto on both will add $2000, while Dualis will offer a $2000 ST option pack with ESC, side and curtain airbags and 16-inch alloy.

To keep the GS range fresh, a minor facelift is expected in 2008. The LS460’s 4.6-litre V8, complete with its world-first eight-speed automatic, will be slotted into the current GS. The new GS460’s expected 280kW/493Nm powerplant should give the V8 a performance edge over the hybrid GS.
