Tesla's electric luxury sedan will be Tesla’s first attempt at volume production and is capable of carrying seven people. Zero to 100km/h will come in just 5.6 seconds and offer three battery options will be on offer, from the base car’s 257km to 370km and range topping 483km.

Released: Dec 2014

French car-maker Peugeot launched its seven-seat 5008 people-mover in Australia in May 2013 after it went on sale in Europe in 2009, so its not really surprising that it is time for a facelift. The freshen-up brings updates to the cabin and subtle styling changes including a sharper front-end with Peugeot’s new corporate face.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new powertrain option for its popular C-Class, pairing the 2.1-litre diesel of the C250 with an electric motor to decrease fuel consumption and emissions.

Lexus ripped the covers off its stunning RC coupe at the 2013 Tokyo motor show, revealing a striking two-door based on the underpinnings of the well-received IS sedan. Set to do battle with the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5, the RC will gain a hi-po ‘F’ Sports model later in the year.

Model: Mazda2

Released: Dec 2014

The world got a glimpse of the next-gen Mazda2 thanks to the Hazumi concept from the 2014 Geneva motor show, with the production model to set to be revealed later in the year. Larger than the model it will replace, the Hazumi featured a design that followed the Mazda3 and CX-5, meaning the production-ready 2 will stick to a similar formula.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: C-Class - C63 AMG

Released: Dec 2014

The C63 AMG performance flagship of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class range will sprint into local showrooms before the end of the year, bringing with it styling from the new-gen model as well as new powertrain that is rumoured to be a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine.

Model: 500X

Released: Nov 2014

The Fiat Chrysler Group will ramp up its platform sharing this year, with the much talked about baby Jeep spawning a soft-roader from Fiat. Likely to receive the 500X moniker, it will be a more city-friendly crossover and will be available in front-wheel drive, leaving the all-wheel drive version to Jeep.

Model: Discovery

Released: Nov 2014

British brand Land Rover will drop the ‘4’ from its updated Discovery range when it arrives in 2014 and add a new supercharged petrol V6, taken from the Range Rover Sport. Expect other minor updates to the cabin and standard features list.

The final facelift for Ford’s Territory will arrive before Ford shuts down local production, bringing minor cosmetic tweaks and more refinements to a platform dating back to 2004.

Baby Nissan gets tweaks to the nose as well as spoiler and fog lamp updates. Interior changes are to centre console and steering wheel controls. Ti variant also gets alloy-wheel re-style. 1.5 litre version is no longer available with all models now fitted with 1.2 three-cylinder engine.

Released: Nov 2014

Improvements to ride and comfort are on their way to Holden’s Colorado light-commercial vehicle and Colorado 7 SUV range. However, not much is expected to change cosmetically or with powertrain options.

Model: Territory

Released: Nov 2014

Little is known about the Ford Territory facelift, but the big SUV will be the last Australian-built vehicle to carry the nameplate before it is replaced later this decade with an internationally-sourced model. The Territory will likely gain updated styling as well as other tweaks to keep it fresh for its final two years of production.

Model: Captur

Released: Nov 2014

Renault's Clio-based Captur sub-compact SUV will arrive in local showrooms in late 2014 and will take on competition such as the Holden Trax, Ford EcoSport and Nissan Juke. Australian-spec Capturs will be powered by a choice of two three and four-cylinder petrol, with the smaller of the two achieving fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km.

Malaysian brand Proton will add to its existing passenger car line-up late in 2014 with a new light-car set to take on established players like the Toyota Yaris and Holden Barina. Details are scarce, but expect the as-yet unnamed model to undercut some of its competitors.

Model: Genesis - Sedan

Released: Nov 2014

Hyundai will enter the luxury segment in Australia for the first time with its Genesis sedan set to kick off from about $50,000 and battle established rivals including the Lexus IS, Infiniti Q50, BMW 3 Series and Holden Caprice. The 5 Series-sized sedan will be powered by a 248kW/400Nm 3.8-litre V6 engine, with Australia missing out on the 313kW/520Nm V8 earmarked for the US.

Model: Falcon

Released: Nov 2014

Despite announcing the closure of local manufacturing in 2016, Ford Australia is pushing ahead with facelift for what will be the last ever Falcon. Due in 2014, the Falcon is expected to keep the same basic glasshouse as the FG, but will feature a redesigned front end and updates to the rear. Expect some mechanical tweaks and improvements to technology features.

BMW is hoping its i3 will help raise the image of electric vehicles from the boring and mundane, to something a little more stylish and acceptable. BMW’s small, but luxurious EV will feature next-generation electric motor technology.

Lexus' stab at a luxury sports coupe market taking on the likes of the BMW 4-Series an Audi A5. A hotter V8-powered variant is already confirmed, but time will tell if this Japanese coupe can take on the best Germany has to offer.

Model: 2 Series - Active Tourer

Some might think its heresy, but BMW are going ahead with bringing a front-wheel drive model to market. The 2-Series Active Tourer will be a small-sized tall-boy hatch to rival Mercedes’ B-Class.

Model: GLA - 45 AMG

Released: Oct 2014

Rounding out Mercedes’ trio of small-sized performance models that already includes the A45 and CLA45 AMG is the GLA45 AMG late in the year. Borrowing the 265kW/450NM 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo powertrain from its siblings, the super hot crossover will feature Merc’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.

Mazda’s new small car will arrive with revised styling to keep it in-step with the Japanese car-maker's Kodo design language. The entry level Mazda will take on the likes of the Toyota Yaris and Honda Jazz.

A facelift is on the way for Toyota's diminutive Yaris light-car in the second half of 2014, which is expected to carry refreshed styling to bring the tiny runabout into line with its larger Corolla sibling. The Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 rival will likely get some mechanical tweaks but Toyota is remaining quiet for now about precise changes to the range.

Lexus will finally introduce a sub-RX SUV into its line-up, with the NX set to go on sale in late 2014/early 2015. The Audi Q5 rival is based on the polarising LF-NX concept from the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, but will carry a more toned-down design to better appeal to the masses.

BMW's new electric vehicle sub-brand, to be called 'BMW i', will arrive on our shores in mid-to-late 2014. The first two models will be the BMW i3 all-electric city car that was previously known as the Megacity Vehicle concept, and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid super-coupe based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept.

Mini is bringing out a not-so-mini 5 door model with, you guessed it, five doors. Based on the Cooper hatch with a little more room, the new car will retain all the styling of its smaller sibling but with added practicality.

Model: 308

Released: Oct 2014

Peugeot has completely redesigned its 308 small car to bring it into line with its current design language, giving it a cleaner VW Golf-esque look. The sleek 308 shares similar design cues to its smaller 208 sibling but features a massive 9.7-inch touchscreen that helps reduce the number of controls on the redesigned dash.

Make: Alfa Romeo

Model: MiTo - Quadrifoglio

Released: Sep 2014

Alfa Romeo will add a range-topping Quad Verde warm-hatch to its moderately updated MiTo light-hatch range early in the year. Power comes from a 125kW/250Nm four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and it is expected to carry a premium over the $28,000 Distinctive.

Japanese luxury brand Infiniti will add some firepower to its local line-up late in 2014 with the arrival of the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol version of the mid-size Q50 sedan. The petrol powertrain will arrive about 10 months after the launch of the turbo-diesel and petrol-electric hybrid variants that went on sale in February.

Czech brand Skoda will build on the success of its new Octavia with a facelifted version of its Superb large sedan and wagon range in the second half of the year. The Superb now carries Skoda's latest design language with a completely new front end, while there are minor mechanical updates such as a new manual gearbox for some variants.

Mitsubishi’s ageing Lancer is set to receive a few tweaks to keep things fresh for the iconic car. Although no news has arrived on the next-generation Lancer, the update should help sell a few more units.

Model: Pulsar - SSS sedan

Released: Aug 2014

The reborn Pulsar is selling well for Nissan in Australia and the car-maker has confirmed it will add a sedan version of its SSS performance hatch later in the year. It is expected to be powered by the same 140kW/240Nm 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine matched with either a six-speed manual or a CVT as the hatch, but there is no word yet on pricing

Model: F-Type - Coupe

Released: Aug 2014

Following the success of the F-Type Convertible, Jaguar will unleash a Coupe version of its latest sportscar in late 2014, with a 405kW 5.0-litre supercharged V8 ‘R’ variant set to headline the range. A pair of V6 engines will also be available, with all powertrains linked to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Model: X4

Released: Aug 2014

BMW’s X6 sports crossover gets a little brother in the shape of the X4 that is set to go into production in 2014. The X4 is the same length as the X3 but the sloping rear roof-line will surely have an impact on head-room. BMW is gunning for the Range Rover Evoque and Porsche’s forthcoming Macan with the X4.

The Abarth Essesse is set to receive a replacement in the form of the Abarth 595. Set to retain the same engine and performance as its outgoing cousin, it's rumoured to drop even price, representing even greater value.

Fiat’s micro-sized 500 will receive an update bringing more value to the range. Rumoured to receive a bump in standard equipment while retaining the same price, Fiat's funky 500 should become even more popular.

Model: Qashqai

Released: Aug 2014

Nissan has swapped the Dualis name for the global Qashqai moniker for its second-gen compact crossover and with it comes a raft of improvements including new small-capacity turbocharged engines as well as completely redesigned cabin. Longer, wider and lower than the model it replaces, the Qashqai comes off the same platform as its larger X-Trail sibling.

Make: Volkswagen

Model: Polo

Released: Aug 2014

Sharper front-end styling and a suite of new petrol and diesel engines highlight the facelift for Volkswagen's Polo light-car range later this year. One of the new diesel powertrains is capable of sipping just 3.2L/100km on the Euro cycle, but it is not clear whether this is coming to Australia. Expect the GTI hot-hatch to arrive in 2015 with the option of a manual gearbox.

Model: 4 Series - M4

Released: Jul 2014

BMW will eschew the naturally aspirated V8s of previous model M cars in favour of a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder producing 317kW/550Nm for its M3 sedan and M4 Coupe twins when they arrive mid-year. Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic was used to lower the weight which is down by 80kg compared to the outgoing M3.

A refreshed BMW X3 arrives mid-year, with the second-generation crossover gaining subtle styling tweaks as well as interior updates to keep it fresh against its competition such. BMW will launch the facelifted model about the same time as the new X6-inspired X4 sports crossover.

Model: 4 Series - M4

BMW's new performance-orientated twins, the M3 and M4, will now be powered by twin-turbo six-cylinder engines, forgoing the popular V8 of the previous generation. The top-spec 3 and 4 Series cars are expected to become the new benchmark for sports cars.

A sedan version of Mitsubishi’s diminutive Mirage is expected in 2014 and could well be called the Attrage which is a combination of the words ‘attractive’ and ‘Mirage’. The Thai-built light car will be powered by the same 1.2-litre MIVEC engine as the Mirage with a manual gearbox or CVT and fuel economy of 4.5L/100km.

Renault will add its latest family face to its aging Megane hatch and wagon range mid-year, along with a number of other mid-life updates. A new front-end design brings it into line with the smaller Clio range, while the rear of the hatch stays much the same.

Mercedes-Benz top-selling C-Class mid-sizer will get an all-new replacement in 2014, with the German marque’s local arm offering all-wheel drive and a diesel-electric powertrain on its highest selling model for the first time. New safety technology and improved connectivity and new styling should lift the C-Class even more in 2014.

Honda’s all-important third-generation Jazz light car should give the Japanese brand a boost in 2014, with a heavily improved hybrid powertrain and Honda’s first dual-clutch transmission, on petrol-electric versions. The Jazz will feature a much-improved cabin and will have an updated version of the wonderfully practical ‘magic’ seats.

Porsche’s long-rumoured baby SUV is now being developed and will be named the Macan. It is expected to be based on sister company Audi’s Q5 and should be a key plank in Porsche’s mid-term drive to double annual sales to 150,000 vehciles.

Model: Yeti

Released: Jun 2014

Skoda unveiled its updated Yeti at the Frankfurt motor show in 2013, revealing a slightly more conservative front end design. The Czech car-maker will offer the Yeti in two distinct model variants for the first time, with one carrying “an elegant, stylish city look” while the other will feature an “off-road look for trips in the country”.

Jeep’s radically different Cherokee replacement arrives in 2014, with a polarizing design, front and all-wheel drive configurations and a hardcore trail-rated Trailhawk variant topping the range. More car like than before, thanks to its monocoque chassis, the Cherokee range is set to kick off from around $30,000.

The last ever Australian developed Ford Performance Vehicle will arrive in the form of the FPV GT F 351. Although performance figures are yet to be finalised, the number 351 is a dead giveaway to the goals FPV are trying to achieve.

BMW has fast-tracked development of its first hybrid supercar and confirmed it will put the vehicle into production, remaining "99 per cent" faithful to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept from the 2009 Frankfurt show.

The concept offered M3 performance but Prius fuel economy, thanks to a 120kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel engine in combination with two electric motors.

Model: 4 Series - Gran Coupe

Released: Jun 2014

BMW’s habit of creating niches between body-styles continues in 2014 with the arrival of the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe mid-year. Looking like a cross between a 3 Series and a 6 Series Gran Coupe, the 4 Series features a liftback and will go up against the likes of the Audi A5 Sportback when it arrives.

Make: Porsche

Model: 911 - Targa

Released: Jun 2014

Porsche is bringing back its iconic Targo-topped 911 this year after a 20-year absence. The partial convertible features a wrap-around rear window and a removable roof panel and rather than a manual system like Targas of old, the 2014 iteration can be folded down simply by hitting a button.

Released: May 2014

An update to the Honda’s city-sized City sedan is on the cards before the middle of the year, with the little runabout getting a fresh face ahead of the mechanically related Jazz hatch. Information about the City is limited, but expect it to gain technology and powertrain upgrades over the current model that went on sale in February 2009.

Model: Korando

Released: May 2014

SsangYong will ramp up its efforts to boost sales in Australia with a refreshed Korando compact-SUV before the middle of the year. The curved front-end of the Giugiaro-penned original is gone in favour of a sharper, more squared off look. The cabin also gains soft-touch materials and a new fascia.

Make: Audi

Model: A8 - S8

Released: May 2014

Audi will follow up the launch of its facelifted A8 limo with the S8 performance flagship in May. The quattro all-wheel-drive S8 is powered by a 4.0 TFSI V8 engine with 380kW sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed conventional automatic transmission. Expect pricing somewhere between $250,000 and $300,000.

Make: Volkswagen

Model: Golf - R

Released: May 2014

Volkswagen will launch the hardcore 'R' version of its Golf 7 in the first half of the year, likely to be powered by the same 206kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine from the Audi S3 that has been de-tuned because of our hot weather. At the same time VW will introduce the Golf GTI Performance which boosts power over the regular GTI by 7kW.

Model: A3 - S3 sedan

Released: May 2014

Following the introduction of a booted version of its A3 in early 2014, Audi will add a hardcore S3 performance variant to the range by the middle of the year. Under the skin, the sedan is much the same as the hatch, with power coming from a 206kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 0-100km/h dash time of five seconds.

Released: May 2014

The arrival of the Porsche Macan will see the German car-maker doubling its SUV line-up. Already a styling hit, time will tell if it becomes as popular as its larger Cayenne sibling.

Model: Pathfinder - Hybrid

Released: May 2014

Nissan’s seven-seat Pathfinder SUV range will be boosted by the arrival of the petrol-electric hybrid powertrain which combines a battery-powered electric motor to a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Nissan is hoping the hybrid variant will make up for the lack of diesel powertrain and it will bring fuel consumption down to 7.5 litres per 100km.

Model: RCZ - R

Released: May 2014

A super hot ‘R’ version of Peugeot’s RCZ coupe will land in Australia in early 2014, becoming the most powerful production Peugeot in history. Powered by a 199kW 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, the RCZ R will feature more aggressive styling than the standard model that arrived with a facelift in mid-2013.

Skoda will introduce a new small car to Australia that sits below the Golf-based Octavia. The Rapid was to arrive in its sedan-like Liftback bodystle, but Skoda Australia is holding out for the more hatch-like Spaceback instead. Expect an opening price of around $20,000.

Model: CT

Released: Apr 2014

A mid-life facelift should keep the Lexus CT200h hatch fresh for at least another couple of years in the face of some stiff competition including the rejuvenated Audi A3 and strong selling Mercedes A-Class. Subtle styling changes include a more prominent ‘spindle’ grille and new alloy wheel designs, but the mechanicals stay the same.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: GLA

Released: Apr 2014

Mercedes-Benz will add another SUV to its line-up in the form of the A-Class based GLA in 2014. The GLA is slightly longer than the A-Class and while powertrain and specs are yet to be confirmed, the GLA concept from the 2013 Shanghai motor show featured the same 155kW 2.0-litre engine as the A250 hot hatch, driving all four wheels via a seven-speed dual clutch auto.

A petrol-electric plug-in hybrid version of Mitsubishi’s mid-size Outlander SUV will hit local showrooms in 2014, making it the first plug-in hybrid SUV available in Australia. Mitsubishi is claiming official fuel figures on the European cycle of 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres and a cruising range of 897km when combining the petrol and electric motors.

The 3 to 4 Series revolution continues with BMW launching its drop-top 4 Series mid-year. The convertible Bimmer features a sound-absorbing headliner that reduces wind noise by up to 2dB, while the metal roof takes around 20 seconds to lower. A three-setting neck warmer built into the headrests is one of the many available options.
