The Thai-built light car will be powered by the same 1.2-litre MIVEC engine as the Mirage with a manual gearbox or CVT and fuel economy of 4.5L/100km.

A petrol-electric plug-in hybrid version of Mitsubishi’s mid-size Outlander SUV will hit local showrooms in 2014, making it the first plug-in hybrid SUV available in Australia. Mitsubishi is claiming official fuel figures on the European cycle of 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres and a cruising range of 897km when combining the petrol and electric motors.

Mitsubishi latest stab at the light car segment will come in the form of the Thai-built Mirage in January. Mitsubishi will target budget-conscious drivers with prices starting at a $12,990 for the entry level ES, just $500 more than the Nissan Micra. The reborn Mirage will be powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that sips 4.6 litres of petrol per 100km in manual guise.

Come October, today's 1996-vintage Magna will look a lot like America's new mid-sized Galant - a model with which Mitsubishi's vital Magna replacement will share both both its name and platform - previewed at the 2004 New York show. Larger, stronger and roomier, the front-drive 2005 sedan-only Magna/Galant will be powered by a 180kW 3.8 V6 and five-speed auto.

The ageing CE Mirage series will be replaced by the Honda Jazz-sized Colt, a five-door front-drive 1.5-litre one-box hatch. Built on the same platform as future Smart and Hyundai models, the five-door could be joined by a three-door. Mitsu Oz is likely to ditch the Mirage name for the new global Colt badge.

Mitsubishi will deliver what's supposed to be Australia's first homegrown all-wheel drive sports sedan (discounting HSV's limited-build Coupe4 two-door due on sale in July) when it launches the Magna VR-X AWD. Priced at $42,490, it lacks the 2WD VR-X's manual gearbox, 17-inch wheels and 163kW.

The ageing Nimbus gets the chop for the stylish Grandis, a seven-seat people-mover in the mould of the more expensive Honda Odyssey.
