Model: CX-9

Released: Dec 2012

Mazda’s facelifted CX-9 will arrive in late 2012 with a new nose based on the ‘Kodo’ design language to carry the model through for at least another three years. The updated seven-seat SUV will feature minor changes to the interior and a refreshed rear end. The 2013 CX-9 won’t get Mazda’s fuel-saving Skyactiv drivetrain but that will no doubt appear in the next generation.

Model: LS

Released: Dec 2012

Lexus wheeled out the new-look LS range globally in August 2012 with the now-familiar spindle grille and a more aggressive stance to reposition the brand as more sporting and less conservative. Essentially a mid-life update of the fourth generation LS that launched in 2007, the new model has over 3000 new or changed parts over the existing model.

Make: Mazda

Model: Mazda6

Released: Dec 2012

The third-generation Mazda6 will hit the market in late 2012, in both sedan and wagon bodystyles powered by SkyActiv petrol or diesel engines. All models will feature a host of new green technology, including i-Eloop regenerative braking.

Make: Audi

Model: Q5

Released: Dec 2012

Audi’s popular Q5 SUV receives a mid-life update in early 2013, but don’t expect to notice a huge difference in styling. Changes will be mainly under the skin, with all five engines being fine-tuned to improve power and fuel efficiency. Audi has also announced that it will sell a hybrid variant of the Q5 in 2013.

Model: G

Released: Dec 2012

Infiniti's high-tech luxury coupe range offers rear-drive thrills and is powered by a 3.7-litre V6, with a hybrid version on the cards. A rip-snorting IPL performance version with more power and sharper handling tops the range, which Nissan Australia is relaunching here in 2012.

Model: G

Released: Dec 2012

With a folding hard-top and 242kW, Infiniti has BMW's 335i Convertible on missile lock. High-tech features including a Bose Open Air sound system and adaptive climate-control will make this a tempting choice for Australian sun worshippers when the Infiniti brand is relaunched here in 2012.

Make: Foton

Model: Tunland

Released: Nov 2012

Foton's big utility – 120mm wider and 180mm longer than Toyota's HiLux will offer Euro 5 compliance and a probable four-star safety rating. It will be bedded-down on the Australian market for six months before hitting its main target market, North America. The Tunland will be powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder Cummins diesel.

Make: Mitsubishi

Model: Outlander

Released: Nov 2012

Previewed by the plug-in hybrid PX-MiEV and PX-MiEV II concepts, the next Outlander will debut a new front-end design theme that will eventually roll out across Mitsubishi's SUV, ute and crossover ranges. Petrol variants will be powered by a version of its 2.0-litre SOHC four-cylinder ‘MIVEC’ engine, complete with an all-new valve train.

Make: BMW

Model: 6 Series - M6

Released: Nov 2012

The M6 coupe and convertible twins will become BMW’s fastest-ever two-door cars, with the coupe capable of laying down a 0-100km/h time of just 4.2 seconds – one tenth of a second quicker than the M5. Powered by the same twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 as the M5, the new M6 kick out 412kW of power at 6000rpm and 680Nm of torque at 1500-5750rpm.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: CLS-class - Shooting Brake

Released: Nov 2012

Mercedes-Benz has announced that from 2012 it will produce a sleek wagon version of its pioneering CLS four-door coupe, said to be inspired by the first motorised Shooting Brakes that appeared in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s as luxurious, coach-built two-door wagons.

Make: Honda

Model: CR-V

Released: Nov 2012

The first all-new Honda CR-V since 2006 will feature a bolder front end that takes on a more aggressive demeanour than its predecessor. Honda says it will offer more space than before, along with a lower floor in the rear storage area. Expect more efficient engines, including a diesel. It will also be the first CR-V to offer a front-wheel-drive variant.

Make: Holden

Model: Colorado 7

Released: Nov 2012

Based on the workhorse of the same name, the Colorado 7 SUV will fill a gap in Holden’s line-up that has existed since the demise of the Jackaroo in 2004. The seven-seat Colorado 7 will be bigger than the Captiva 7 and will feature a third row, making it a genuine seven-seater. Expect the big SUV to arrive in 4x4 guise only, using the same range of transmissions as its ute sibling.

Model: A4 - Allroad

Released: Oct 2012

The facelifted Audi A4 will gain a psuedo-SUV wagon variant dubbed Allroad will join its larger A6 Allroad sibling in Australian showrooms for the first time, offering a jacked up, rugged version of the A4 Avant wagon for cashed-up country folk.

Model: A6 - S6

Released: Oct 2012

Like its BMW M5 rival the high-po Audi S6 will be powered by a turbocharged V8, hoofing out 309kW and 550Nm while making a 25 per cent fuel-economy gains over the old V10. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will do the talking between the engine and the Quattro all-wheel drive system, resulting in 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

Model: Grand Cherokee - SRT8

Released: Oct 2012

Understood to be benchmarked against BMW’s X6 M for both engine performance and chassis dynamics, a high-performance and aggressive-looking SRT8 variant of the Grand Cherokee will pack a stonking 6.4-litre Hemi V8 punching out 347kW and 630Nm.

Model: Sorento

Released: Oct 2012

The only notable change to Australia’s medium SUV landscape in 2012 is a Hyundai Santa Fe-based chassis revision for Kia’s Sorento, due to hit showrooms in August.

A 60mm higher ride height than the A6 Avant, chunky black wheel arches, roof rails and stainless steel underbody protection will mark out the ruggedised A6 Allroad from its road-only wagon sibling when it arrives in Australia.

Model: Corolla

Released: Oct 2012

The next-generation Toyota Corolla hatch will feature an edgier design and improved interior quality to take the fight to its traditional rivals, the Mazda3 and Ford Focus. The top-selling Corolla has never had it so tough in the small-car market and Toyota will be using the latest technology and a variety of powertrains to maintain its status as king of the small cars.

Model: A7 - S7

Released: Oct 2012

A fire-breathing S7 coupe will join Audi's A7 range, motivated by a new 4.0-litre V8 engine force-fed by twin turbochargers to develop 309kW and 550Nm. Despite the monstorous power and torque, consideration to the environment is ensured by the inclusion of cylinder deactivation technology, which enables the mighty mill to run on four cylinders while cruising.

Released: Oct 2012

Malaysian marque Proton is gearing up to launch its compact Exora people-mover - a first for the brand's Australian subsidiary. Mixing fertility with frugality courtesy of a small four-cylinder engine, the Exora will likely undercut the cheapest MPVs currently on-sale when it launches in October.

Model: A8 - S8

Released: Oct 2012

Packing 382kW and 650Nm from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, the Audi S8 will serve as a high-performance flagship to Audi's sedan range. Downsizing from the old Lamborghini-derived 5.2-litre V10 will yield claimed fuel economy gains of up to 3 litres per 100km.

Released: Oct 2012

The first product from Chinese brand Joylong will be an as-yet-unnamed high-roof van powered by a Euro 5-compliant Cummins diesel engine and expected to be similar in dimensions to the high-roof variants of the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

Model: XF - Sportbrake

Released: Oct 2012

The much-fancied Jaguar XF will get a sleek new wagon variant when the Sportbrake launches locally in late 2012, available by special order only. The stylish Sportbrake isn’t just eye candy, with Jaguar claiming the load area is wide enough to carry a set of golf clubs sideways.

Model: Focus - ST

Released: Oct 2012

XR is out, ST is in where the new performance variant of Ford's third-generation Focus is concerned. The Focus ST is expected to replace the Volvo-based five-cylinder unit of the outgoing model with a 184kW/360Nm version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol four-cylinder.

Make: ZX

Model: GrandTiger

Released: Oct 2012

ZX Auto will become Australia's seventh Chinese brand with its GrandTiger ute range. Powered by the same 2.4-litre Mitsubishi four-cylinder engine as Great Wall's range, it has received Australian Design Rule (ADR) certification in single-cab, dual-cab and cab-chassis layouts with 4x4 and 4x2 powertrains. Sales will commence in Perth from October.

Make: Volkswagen

Model: Up!

Released: Sep 2012

Volkswagen’s 3540mm-long city car is based on Volkswagen’s new transverse modular platform and debuts international debut at the 2011 Frankfurt show. A new-generation 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine in 44kW and 55kW tune will be available from launch with a target price of less than $15,000.

Model: 208

Released: Sep 2012

Peugeot Australia will launch its all-new 208 light car in September. Smaller, lighter and more frugal than the 207 it replaces, the mini car is also likely to start from under $20k.

Make: Hyundai

Model: Santa Fe

Released: Sep 2012

The next generation Hyundai Santa Fe is due in local showrooms in late 2012, but Australian buyers may miss out on the long wheelbase version, which is slated for left-hand drive markets only. The Korean car-maker is promising better fuel efficiency and a lower kerb weight.

Model: Volt

Released: Aug 2012

General Motors has confirmed the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid car will be sold in Australia. The vehicle known as a “Prius-buster” will be introduced in the US in 2010, with Australian sales one or two years later. The Volt will be a four-passenger vehicle using a lithium-ion battery pack.

The Infiniti M luxury sedan will be one of the founding members of the Infiniti range in the brand's second coming to Australia, made possible because of the right-hand drive engineering for the UK market. V6 diesel and petrol engines plus V8 petrol and hybrid powerplants are on the cards as Nissan Australia intends to go full speed ahead against Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Lexus.

Mitsubishi’s ASX baby SUV is getting a minor facelift to bring it into line with the Japanese maker’s new look, previewed on the upcoming Outlander. Only trainspotters will notice the subtle changes when the updated model arrives on our shores in August 2012.

Hyundai is poised to add heat to its quirky Veloster coupe with the addition of a 155kW/265Nm Turbo version, priced around $35k and pitched against rivals like the Toyota 86, Honda CR-Z and Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Model: Astra

The Astra nameplate is set to return to our shores when it adorns the front of Opel's small-sized player from the second half of 2012. Pitched more upmarket and as an alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, it should be available on both five-door hatch and, probably, new Sports Tourer body styles and priced from around $25,000.

A stylish small sedan is the latest model to be added to Malaysian brand Proton’s Australian line-up when it arrives in August 2012. The Prevé will feature a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engines.

The Insignia will top Opel's Australian model range when GM's German brand is launched in the second half of 2012. The mid-sized model range is likely to include both sedan and wagon body styles and a selection of small-capacity turbo engines.

Model: Megane - RS265

Released: Aug 2012

Renault will give its scorching Megane RS hot hatch even more poke courtesy of an upgraded 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 198kW (up 14kW) and360Nm of torque (up 20Nm). Reflecting the higher output, the car will now be known as the RS265, rather than the RS250.

Released: Aug 2012

Nissan's small global small sedan is based on the company's global 'V' platform which underpins the latest Micra, and was revealed in production form at the 2011 Guangzhou motor show in China. It stretches the Micra's platform to the size of the current Tiida and will be sold in Australia alongside the Micra.

Released: Aug 2012

The Corse light-sized car will open the the premium GM brand's line-up when it is launched here in the second half of 2012. Pictured on the Australian Opel website only in three-door form, it will be priced at the premium end of the segment and go up against Euro rivals like the VW Polo, Peugeot 207 and Skoda Fabia.

Arguably the most important model at launch for Infiniti in Australia, the BMW X5-sized Infiniti FX crossover will be sold here with three engine options, including two Euro 5 emissions-compliant petrol engines – a The 175kW/550Nm 3.0-litre diesel, a 247kW 3.7-litre DOHC V6 and a 290kW 5.0-litre V8.

Model: Amarok - SingleCab

Released: Jul 2012

Volkswagen will add a single cab variant to its Amarok ute range in mid-2012, featuring the same engine and transmission line-up as its dual cab sibling. A 2.0-litre petrol engine and an eight-speed automatic will also join the range by mid-year.

Model: Continental - V8

Released: Jul 2012

Bespoke British marque Bentley will 'downsize' to a twin-turbo V8 for its Continental GT coupe and GTC cabriolet, which will slot beneath the existing 6.0-litre W12 powertrain. The Audi-sourced engine will produce 373kW and a thumping 660Nm of torque.

Model: C4 Aircross

Released: Jul 2012

Citroen's all-new city-SUV is based on Mitsubishi's ASX, rather than the C4 hatchback and will be the French brand's first SUV in Australia. Petrol and diesel models with a choice of front-drive or all-wheel-drive will be available in Europe, although Australian specifications are not yet clear.

The successor to the previously-popular Chrysler 300C is, at least cosmetically, more evolution than revolution. Chrysler designers attempted to achieve a more “tailored appearance” via more attention to detail across in terms of body sculpting and practical elements such as aerodynamics and driver visibility. A hi-po SRT8 variant will pack a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 producing 347kW and 630Nm.

Model: 6 Series - Gran Coupe

BMW will release a four-door version of its 6 Series coupe, designed to target niche segment product such as the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS-class. The car differentiates itself in the BMW line-up by offering more practicality than the existing 6 Series cars and sleeker styling than the top-shelf 7 Series limousine.

Subaru named its all-new rear-drive sportscar BRZ. Subaru, which developed the new 2+2 sports coupe in cahoots with Toyota, contributed mainly to the rear-drive drivetrain and chassis, which is shared with Toyota for its 86.

Released: Jul 2012

Volkswagen will introduce its facelifted four-door coupe to the local market in 2012 with a new nose and tail but minus the 'Passat' badge carried by the previous model. By simply calling it CC, the German brand will hope to dinstinguish the car from its more humble siblings in the Passat family.

Model: Range Rover Evoque - eD4

Released: Jul 2012

Range Rover will launch entry-level, front-drive eD4 variants of its uber-stylish evoque compact SUV in July, starting from under $50k. The 110kW oil-burning engine returns fuel consumption figures of fewer than 50L/100km in two-foor guise.

Make: Peugeot

Model: 4008

Released: Jun 2012

The Japanese-built 4008 will be based on Mitsubishi's ASX but despite the higher model number will be priced lower, from less than $30,000. Peugeot says it will be produced in both FWD and AWD configurations. Engine choices will include a 2.0-litre petrol engine, Mitsubishi and Peugeot-sourced diesel engines with manual and CVT gearbox options.

Released: Jun 2012

Similar in concept to the higher-riding DS4 hatch, the DS5 is even more adventurous in comparison to its donor model, featuring complex body-side surfacing and a high, sweeping roofline. Citroen says the DS5 will offer five seats, a driving position “worthy of a gran turismo coupé” and “all the access and modularity of a hatchback.

Japanese luxury specialist Lexus will facelift its RX SUV to reflect the 'spindle grille' design language initiated by the new GS sedan, while adding a macho F-Sport variant.

Make: Holden

Model: Colorado

Released: Jun 2012

GM is readying its own new-generation, Thai-built Chevrolet pick-up to replace the Isuzu D-Max-based Colorado. The new one-tonne utility is likely to end up with Holden badges and could be powered by 2.5 and 2.8-litre Thai-built engines co-developed with Italian diesel specialist VM Motori.

Model: i30

Released: Jun 2012

A second-generation of Hyundai's i30 hatch range will have an upmarket looking cabin and more distinctive and aggressive look than its predecessor, in line with the brand's Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy. A choice of low-emissions four-cylinder 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines will be offered.

Model: Leaf

NISSAN is leading the race to bring a mass-produced zero-emissions electric vehicle to Australian new-car showrooms. The Japanese company announced it will have a plug-in EV electric family car on sale here in 2012. It will be a five-seater with an electric range of more than 160km.

Make: BMW

Model: 5 Series - ActiveHybrid 5

Released: Jun 2012

BMW will be first of the big three German luxury brands to unleash a hybrid onto the Australian market. A turbocharged petrol straight-six with a 40kW electric motor sandwiched between it and the eight-speed ZF automatic will produce a combined 250kW and 450Nm. The hybrid 5 Series will hit 100km/h in 5.9s but return fuel consumption of 6.4L/100km.

Make: Ferrari

Model: California

Released: Jun 2012

Ferrari is to update its California with mild styling tweaks and a more powerful engine, expected to boost power by 22kw to 360kW. Performance should be further enchanced by a weight reduction and suspension upgrades, while the cabin is likely to be packed with more technology such as smartphone integration.

Adding practicality to Audi’s light-car line-up, the five-door A1 Sportback should also provide extra head and shoulder room for rear occupants due to a slightly enlarged height. A 25kg weight gain should not trouble what is likely to be a carryover engine line-up.

Audi Australia managing director Uwe Hagen indicated that the company would give the new and sportier A6 Avant wagon a try Down Under, despite a patchy sales record in this country.

Released: Jun 2012

FERRARI'S 458 Spider will feature a patented 25kg aluminium retractable hard-top that tucks away between its engine and the two-seat cockpit and can deploy in 14 seconds. Despite a 50kg weight gain, Ferrari claims a 3.4-second 0-100km/h acceleration time. The Prancing Horse guarantees the Spider to have identical levels of structural rigidity as the coupe.

Make: Isuzu

Model: D-Max - Ute

Released: Jun 2012

Compared with the Holden Colorado with which it shares much mechanically, the Isuzu D-Max will get different sheet metal forward of the A pillars and rear of the cabin – including more macho wheel arch flares. Single, space and crew-cab body styles will be available, all powered by the carryover 3.0-litre, 130kW/380Nm four-cylinder diesel engine.

Honda's next-gen, British-built Civic hatch is likely to retain the current model's angular design when it launches here shortly after the sedan version (sourced from Thailand). Honda says the car has been designed with particular focus on ride and handling, reduced CO2 emissions and interior quality, while keeping its class-leading cabin and boot space.

Released: Jun 2012

Toyota will finally get back into the sportscar business with a circa-$35K rear-drive coupe developed in conjunction with Subaru. The successor to Celica was styled by Toyota and built on a new "Impreza-inspired" platform, driving only the rear wheels and powered by a Subaru flat-four engine featuring Toyota-developed direct injection.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: M-class

Released: May 2012

The redesigned Mercedes-Benz M-class will be roomier, quicker and 25 per cent more efficient than the outgoing model. Range is likely to kick off with a 2.1-litre turbo-diesel variant that is as fuel-efficient as a hybrid Toyota Camry - the first M-class to get four-pot propulsion.

Released: May 2012

Promising 18 per cent better fuel economy and CO2 output than the previous hybrid GS (sipping 6.3L/100km and emitting 145g/km) the new GS450h will get a revised 213kW 3.5-litre direct-injected Atkinson cycle V6 mated with the latest hybrid drive system for a combined 252kW of power and 345Nm of torque.

BMW will introduce two entry-level versions of its volume-selling 3 Series sedan range - the $56,400 318d diesel and $57,600 320i petrol - to complement the existing three variant line-up.

A new mid-sized Prius family wagon, the seven-seat Prius V will join Toyota's petrol-electric line-up in 2012 alongside the standard hatch and 'C' light car. The Prius V was shown in concept form at the 2011 Melbourne show.

Make: Mercedes-Benz

Model: B-Class

Released: Apr 2012

Benz's premium compact B-class will continue to have the tall layout of the existing car but is otherwise significantly changed. Efficient new four-cylinder engines and an all-new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions provide propulsion and the luxurious new interior promises S-class beating rear legroom thanks to a longer, wider body.
