That said, it cannot match the Toyota's efficiency, with a fuel consumption figure of 4.6L/100km (Prius: 3.9L/100km) and CO2 emissions of 109g/km (versus 89g/km).

Audi used the 2008 Paris motor show to present the “A1 Sportback concept study”, which is a five-door body style derivative of the upcoming A1. The biggest changes to the facelifted CL are under the bonnet, with engines promising more power and lower emissions. The entry-level CL500 BlueEfficiency is claimed to return 23 per cent lower fuel consumption while CO2 emissions reduce from 288 to 224g/km. Meanwhile, fire-breathing AMG versions will debut AMG's new 5.5-litre twin-turbo, direct-injection V8.

Mitsubishi will reintroduce a third body derivative of the Triton one-tonner with the four-door/five-seat Club Cab. To be available in at least 4x4 diesel form, the Club Cab variant will join the cab-chassis/single-cab and dual-cab versions of the Triton ute for the first time in five years.

A collaboration between Lamborghini and Swiss watch-maker Blancpain, the limited-run LP 570-4 will have a large fixed rear spoiler and unique engine cover derived directly from the race cars in the one-make Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo racing series. A dry weight of just 1340kg combined with a 419kW 5.2-litre V10 will result in acceleration from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds.

Volvo will unveil its second-generation S60 sedan in locally in late 2010. Based on the S60 concept from Detroit 2008 (pictured), it shares the same platform as the XC70 and S80 models. With production shifting to Thailand, a Fiesta Sedan will join the range for the first time, with petrol powered sedans receiving automatic-only transmissions in the guise of Ford's Powershift (similar to Volkswagen's DSG) gearbox, linked to a 1.6-litre Ti-VCT engine packing 89kW and 151Nm of torque. The 66kW/200Nm 1.6 TDCi diesel engine option is closely related to that of the co-existing Econetic model and will be distribute power through a five-speed manual transmission.

Holden will discontinue the Statesman and offer just two long-wheelbase Caprice models, with the 3.6-litre Caprice V6 replacing the Statesman V6 as the base model and offering a four per cent fuel saving over the outgoing model. The V8 model will use two per cent less fuel and be capable of running on E85 bio-ethanol but power output is 10kW down, to 260kW.

Alfa Romeo will launch a new model variant to its MiTo range by mid-2010 - the Cloverleaf model-leader, which is powered by a 125kW 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine, via a new six-speed manual transmission. A self-shifting DDCT gearbox, Alfa’s first double-clutch transmission, is also expected to be added to the MiTo range.
