Make: Saab

Model: 9-2X

Released: Oct 2004

If approved for right-hand drive production, Saab's first all-wheel drive - the Subaru Impreza-based 9-2X - will go on sale here by October 2004. Built by Subaru, which is 20 per cent owned by Saab owner GM, the 9-2X five-door will be the cheapest Saab, offering 2.5 atmo and 2.0-litre turbo boxer engines.

Make: Proton

Model: Satria

Released: Oct 2004

Proton is likely to use the Sydney motor show to launch the second of its all-new models (following the Wira replacement in June) - the redesigned Satria small hatch. Set to spawn the successor for one of Australia's best-value hot-hatches, the next-generation Satria GTi will be a highlight of the new range.

Make: Citroen

Model: Xsara - Picasso

Released: Oct 2004

Finally arriving in Australia many months after its intended on-sale date, the facelifted Xsara-based Picasso people-mover (or monospace, as the Europeans like to call them) will lob around October 2004 with 2.0-litre petrol power. Auto will be the only transmission available and, alas, there will be no diesel either.

Make: BMW

Model: 5 Series - Touring

Released: Oct 2004

Due on sale here by around October 2004 after premiering at Geneva, the all-new, fifth-generation 5 Series Touring - codenamed E60/2 - should bring all of the E60 sedan's brilliance to the luxury wagon market. That means active steering, a hybrid chassis, roomier rear seating and a slightly higher pricetag.

Make: Volkswagen

Model: Golf

Released: Oct 2004

Revealed at the 2003 Frankfurt motor show in both three and five-door hatch variants, the fifth-generation Golf is tipped to go on sale in Australia following the Sydney motor show in October 2004. Following from 2005 will be four-door Bora sedan and Golf station wagon versions, plus hi-po engine models.

Make: Peugeot

Model: 407

Released: Oct 2004

To debut globally at Geneva and locally at Sydney, the new 407 sedan and wagon promise improved quality, safety and dynamics, plus a Peugeot-first dual wishbone front-end. Some will get a six-speed auto and nine airbags to go with new petrol engines, while a new 2.7 V6 diesel should lob here in 2005.

Make: Citroen

Model: C2

Released: Oct 2004

Citroen Australian has already imported a limited run of 25 examples of its C3-based C2 hot hatches, priced at $22,990. However, it won't become freely available until October, when the youth-oriented three-door four-seater should line up here alongside the five-door C3 in 80kW 1.6-litre Sensodrive VTR form.

Model: Falcon - BAII

Released: Oct 2004

Ford's born-again BA Falcon becomes due for its first facelift in October 2004, when it's expected to appear with less weight, updated interior and exterior cosmetics and extra standard equipment such as stability control and other Territory features. It will rival Holden's VZ Commodore and its new V6.

Make: Renault

Model: Megane - Scenic

Released: Oct 2004

Renault will launch its all-new Megane-based Scenic II five-seater people-mover around October 2004. Replacing the popular original, the new Scenic will no longer be available in RX4 all-wheel drive form. In its place is a Megane SUV due around 2006 and the seven-seater, long-wheelbase Grand Scenic.

Make: Volvo

Model: V50

Released: Oct 2004

Volvo's next-generation compact wagon, to be known as V50 rather than V40 like its predecessor, will go on sale a few months after the new S40 - around Sydney show time in October 2004. Slightly shorter but larger in every other respect, V50 will be five-cylinder-only and more expensive than before.

Model: Discovery

Released: Oct 2004

The all-new, third-generation Discovery launched at the 2004 New York show is due on sale here around October this year. The bigger MkIII Disco marks the arrival of a new monocoque platform, a completely redesigned body and cabin, fresh drivetrain components and high-tech electronics.

Make: Audi

Model: A4 - S4 cabriolet

Released: Oct 2004

Audi revealed its first ever S4 Cabriolet at Frankfurt 2003, firing the latest shot in its battle for global performance car domination. A direct rival for BMW’s benchmark M3 convertible, the four-seater S4 cabrio joins S4 sedan and wagon on sale Down Under by around Sydney show time in October.

Make: Kia

Model: Sportage

Released: Oct 2004

The current Sportage is out of production until an all-new, monocoque-chassis replacement is released in Korea in late 2003 and in Australia around Sydney show time. To be based on the next-generation Kia Spectra/Hyundai Elantra subcompact platform, it will feature a new four-cylinder and small V6.

Model: Sorento

Released: Oct 2004

Kia's medium off-roader, the Sorento, gets a manual transmission for its single V6 model, plus the option of a turbo-diesel engine in the third quarter of 2004. One of the first to get in on the diesel act with its well priced Sorento, Kia hopes to claim a slice of the emerging oil-burner SUV market.

Model: Picanto

Released: Oct 2004

The replacement for Kia's entry level car debuted at the 2003 Frankfurt motor show. Picanto will replace the Pride (the previous Pride was sold in Australia as the Ford Festiva) and will go on sale here if Kia Australia can land it here under Rio price and spec at around $11,990 - which seems unlikely at this stage.

Make: Porsche

Model: 911

Released: Oct 2004

Porsche's superstar supercar, the 911, comes in for renewal in 2004. Returning to return to traditional round headlights, the 997-codenamed 911 should also get a 3.8-litre boxer six offering up to 300kW, plus manual, auto and clutchless manual six-speed gearboxes. Expect to see it at September's Paris show.

Make: Chrysler

Model: Crossfire - Roadster

Released: Oct 2004

Like its coupe sibling that went on sale in January 2004, Chrysler's Crossfire Roadster - unveilled at the 2004 Detroit show - is based on the original SLK, but is even truer to its donor car's convertible origins. The Roadster adds 90kg and should be priced under $80,000 when it arrives here in late 2004.

Make: Daihatsu

Model: YRV

Released: Oct 2004

Daihatsu will facelift its YRV mini people-mover in 2004. First displayed at the 2000 Birmingham motor show before being sold here from July 2001, the YRV is Daihatsu's answer to VW's Polo and Peugeot's 206. It comes in for its midlife refresh in the third quarter of 2004, when a turbo version may also lob here.

Make: Ford

Model: F6 Typhoon

Released: Oct 2004

Ford's worst-kept secret was unveilled at the 2004 Melbourne show in the form of FPV's first turbocharged offering. Dubbed F6 Typhoon, it takes the XR6 Turbo to greater extremes and should slot in above Ford's flagship 260kW, $50,130 XR8 and under FPV's 290kW, $59,850 GT later in 2004.

Make: Jaguar

Model: X-Type - Estate

Released: Oct 2004

Jaguar continues its volume chase with the X-Type Estate, which goes on sale in Europe in the second quarter of 2004 and is under consideration for sale in Australia. Like the X-Type saloon, the estate can come with four-wheel drive and a choice of V6 engines, plus turbo-diesel propulsion.

Make: Holden

Model: Astra

Released: Oct 2004

Likely to premiere locally at Sydney in October, the all-new, more expensive fifth-generation AH Astra five-door will be sold alongside rebadged Astra Classic and Astra CD Classic versions of the current TS Astra. Expect three-door, four-door, Zafira people-mover and coupe-convertible versions to follow.

Make: Citroen

Model: Pluriel

Released: Oct 2004

Strong demand in Europe for the C3 Pluriel means the pint-sized convertible won't go on sale here until around October 2004, in 1.6 SensoDrive guise. The three-door, four-seater - with removeable roof, full-length sunroof and tailgate - will be priced below the successful Peugeot 206CC at around $35,000.

Make: Renault

Model: Megane - coupe-convertible

Released: Oct 2004

Due to be unveilled locally at this year's Sydney motor show, the Megane coupe-convertible is Renault's take on Peugeot's successful 206CC and the new 307CC. Featuring a folding metal hard-top, the topless Megane will attract a price premium over its conventional-roofed siblings.

Make: Nissan

Model: Murano

Released: Oct 2004

Nissan Australia is developing a business case for its mid-sized luxury SUV, the Murano. Already sold in the US, Murano will be positioned upstream from the new Pathfinder - also due on sale in 2004 - with a pricetag between $50,000 and $60,000. Expect plenty of equipment, CVT trans and 180kW 3.5 V6.

Model: Pulsar

Released: Oct 2004

The next Pulsar appeared at the 2003 Tokyo show as the C-Note concept car. Shown in virtual production guise, Nissan’s new C-segment small car echoes the new Renault Megane it's based on. Expect better quality, handling, ride, safety and a bigger interior when the new Pulsar arrives here late 2004.
