Make: Holden

Model: Commodore - VZ

Released: Aug 2004

Commodore will get the multi-valve, overhead-cam alloy V6 and five-speed sequential auto it has long needed when the VZ goes on sale around August - complete with 190kW 3.6-litre DOHC power. VZ will be the last major change to the current, VT-based Commodore before the all-new VE arrives in 2006.

Make: Daewoo

Model: Lacetti - hatch

Released: Aug 2004

While the all-new, J200-series, Pininfarina-designed Lacetti sedan went on sale here in September 2003, the ItalDesign-styled hatch appeared in prototype form at the 2003 Frankfurt show and will go on sale Down Under in August 2004. It replaces the top selling Nubira small-medium car.

Make: Mitsubishi

Model: Magna - VR-X AWD

Released: Aug 2004

Mitsubishi will deliver what's supposed to be Australia's first homegrown all-wheel drive sports sedan (discounting HSV's limited-build Coupe4 two-door due on sale in July) when it launches the Magna VR-X AWD. Priced at $42,490, it lacks the 2WD VR-X's manual gearbox, 17-inch wheels and 163kW.

Make: Subaru

Model: Liberty - GT manual

Released: Aug 2004

Subaru will probably wait until the MY05 Liberty/Outback series appears in August before offering a five-speed manual gearbox on the 180kW 2.0-litre turbocharged Liberty GT models. The MY05 series should include a number of minor trim changes that should also spill into the Outback series.

Make: Renault

Model: Master

Released: Aug 2004

Renault will launch its biggest light commercial vehicle, the front-drive Master large van and cab-chassis, during the third quarter of 2004. In Europe gross weights range from 2.8 to 3.5-tonne and payloads from 1046 to 1735kg, while engine choices include 1.9, 2.2 and 2.5-litre common-rail turbo-diesels.

Make: Volkswagen

Model: Caravelle

Released: Aug 2004

VW's fifth-generation Caravelle - in eight, seven and luxury six-seater configurations - introduces 3.2-litre V6 power as well as two torquey new 2.5-litre turbo-diesels. An all-new body and chassis promises improved comfort and driveability. All feature six-speed auto and manual gearboxes.

Make: Proton

Model: Waja - 1.8 auto

Released: Aug 2004

Proton's Waja small car will benefit from the addition of a 1.8-litre automatic variant in August. Replacing the 1.6-litre auto currently available, the self-shifting 1.8 version will be sold alongside a manual-transmission 1.6.

Make: Renault

Model: Kangoo

Released: Aug 2004

Also due around August 2004 is the Renault Kangoo, a direct rival for car-based light commercial vehicles like the Holden Combo and Citroen Berlingo. The compact mini-van features sliding side doors and is popular in Europe, outselling Berlingo and the Peugeot Partner combined.

Make: Audi

Model: A3 - V6

Released: Aug 2004

The top-spec three-door A3, complete with 184kW/320Nm 3.2-litre V6 quattro and six-speed "double clutch" Direct Shift Gearbox, debuted at Sydney 03 and goes on sale here for under $70,000 in August. An all-new S3 performance flagship will follow, as will the five-door Sportback in early 2005.
