Audi's new super-efficient 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine will make its Australian debut in the mid-range A5 Sportback. The four-cylinder 1.8 TFSI generates as much torque as Audi’s current 2.0-litre turbo engine while slashing fuel consumption by more than 20 per cent over the existing 1.8-litre turbo.

Audi-BMW fight ratchets up a notch as RS5 Coupe targets M3. Powered by a free-revving 331kW/430Nm 4.2 V8 that drives all four wheels via a seven-speed ‘S-tronic’ dual-clutch transmission, the RS5 will blast to 100km/h in a claimed 4.6 seconds – the same figure quoted by BMW for the M3 Coupe.

The A5 Sportback will be joined in the second half of 2010 by the S5 model. Unlike the S5 Coupe which is powered by a 4.2-litre V8 and AWD, the S5 Sportback is expected to be powered by the same 245kW/440Nm 3.0-litre V6 supercharged TFSI V6 unit as the S5 Cabriolet, driving all four wheels.

Audi is expected to launch two new models in Australia with its fuel-saving Start-Stop technology as a standard feature. The Audi A4 and Audi A5 2.0 TFSI quattro models will come standard with Start-Stop technology, which on an average, reduces fuel consumption by up to 1.5 litres/100km in city driving.

Audi will fill the gap between the A4 sedan and A5 two-door coupe with another mid-sizer - the new five-door A5 Sportback hatch. Two models – 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel – will slot between $80,000 and $90,000. The A5 Sportback has two extra doors, higher roofline and hatchback practicality.

Audi is expected to launch its S5 Cabriolet flagship locally in December 2009. The S5 employs the S4 sedan’s 245kW/440Nm supercharged 3.0-litre V6 (instead of the S5 Coupe’s 4.2-litre V8), blasting it to 100km/h in a claimed 5.6 seconds. The open-top S5 weighs 1875kg, returns 9.7L/100km and emits 224g/km.

Audi's scintillating new A5 convertible is expected to gain two additional powertrain options late in 2009. A 3.0 TDI producing 176kW/500Nm and a 2.0 TFSI producing 125kW/280Nm.

Released: Nov 2008

Audi is expected to introduce a 3.0 TDI (turbo-diesel) quattro (all-wheel drive) variant to its A5 coupe model range in the fourth quarter of 2008. With some 176kW/500Nm driving through a standard tiptronic transmission, it will be priced at between $90,000 and $95,000 when it finally gets here.

An A5 price-leader in the form of the 1.8T will be launched in April 2008, powered by a turbocharged 125kW-1.8-litre FSI four-cylinder engine driving through a multitronic CVT, and priced from $70,000 to $75,000. A Tiptronic semi-automatic will add $4000 to the price.
