Audi’s flagship A8 sedan gets a mid-life update and arrives in Australia in the second quarter. In a bid to keep up with the lauded Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi will introduce more powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, added safety technology and new optional ‘Matrix’ LED headlights that feature 25 individual diodes per unit.

Packing 382kW and 650Nm from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, the Audi S8 will serve as a high-performance flagship to Audi's sedan range. Downsizing from the old Lamborghini-derived 5.2-litre V10 will yield claimed fuel economy gains of up to 3 litres per 100km.

Audi's S-Class rival includes a 3.0-litre TDI producing 184 kW and 550 Nm, AWD and an eight-speed ZF automatic. Fuel economy is miniscule for a car of this size, at 6.6 l/100kms. Comes with all the features you would expect from a $200 000+ limousine, although the firm suspension can struggle on harsh Australian roads and the styling lacks presence.

Audi Oz will release an upgraded flagship sedan, the A8, by year's end. Apart from a modified grille, exterior mirrors and wheels, plus LED tail-lights and new interior trims, the facelift consists of changes to the A8's adaptive air suspension, steering, running gear and noise suppression systems.

Audi's new-generation S8 super-limo marks the first V10 for the Volkswagen luxury brand. Borrowed from sister company Lamborghini's Gallardo, it adds FSI direct injection to produce 331kW and 540Nm, shading the similarly-powered S6 to blast to 100km/h in a claimed 5.1 seconds.
