BMW's bigger and more upmarket – but still rear-wheel drive – 1 Series hatchback will go on sale in Australia in October with an all-turbo engine range mated to an optional first-in-class ZF eight-speed automatic option for the three models available from launch. A raft of high tech fuel-saving measures are also set to be included.

Released: Aug 2011

The 1 Series M Coupe will provide a high level of standard equipment as well as improved dynamics, including an an extra 25kW of power and 50Nm of torque over the 135i Sport’s acclaimed 3.0-litre turbo six. The six-speed manual-equipped 1 Series M Coupe will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds – the same as the manual M3 sedan.

Released: Dec 2009

BMW Australia will launch its new 123d hatch with a versatile 2.0 litre twin turbo-diesel inline four late in 2009. Powered by a high-output 150kW/400Nm four cylinder engine, available in six-speed automatic and manual guise. The 123d hatch is capable of a fuel consumption figure of just 5.2L/100km.

Released: Jun 2009

BMW previewed an additional model to its 120d range at the Melbourne show. The 120d with manual transmission will be BMW’s most fuel-efficient model, returning 4.8L/100km. Power is by a 130kW/350Nm from the third-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It will be priced at $46,790.

Filling yet another market niche for the prestige German brand, the 1 Series Convertible will be launched alongside the coupe model range. Featuring a fabric roof that takes 22 seconds to open and close and stores away under a solid cover, the 1 Series Convertible offers 280 litres of luggage space.

BMW is expected to reveal its new 1 Series coupe derivative at the 2007 Frankfurt motor show in October. Codenamed "Snowflake", the two-door 1 Series notchback will enter production next year and, unlike the three-door 1 Series hatch, is a certainty for release in Australia next year.

BMW has improved engine performance with its facelifted 1 Series five-door hatch. Expected to maintain its price-point when it arrives here in June, revised One has modified exterior and interior styling, a new-generation diesel, and, for petrol engines, reduced fuel consumption. BMW Oz won't take the new three-door, also revealed at Geneva in March 2007.

BMW's first rear-drive small car since the 2002, the 1 Series five-door hatch arrives here late this year. Rivalling cars like Golf, A3 and 147, 1 Series may sell from just $35K with a 1.8 four. A two-door notchback coupe and convertible like the CS1 concept (pictured) - both dubbed 2 Series - will lob by 2006.
