BMW will introduce M versions of its X5 and X6 SUV twins in 2015, both powered by the same 423kW/750Nm 4.4-litre V8 TwinPower turbocharged V8, capable of launching from 0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds.

When BMW’s third-generation X5 line-up launches in late 2014, it could include an entry-level two-wheel drive variant, bringing it into line with a number of other SUVs. BMW’s X5 M is due to hit local showrooms in January 2010, with a pricetag of $172,900. Powered by a 408kW/680Nm high-performance twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre petrol V8, the X5 M blasts to 100km/h in a supercar-like 4.7 seconds as BMW's answer to Porsche's Cayenne Turbo and Mercedes ML63 AMG.

BMW will launch its most powerful diesel model ever in Australia – the twin-turbocharged X5 3.0sd – in the first quarter of 2008, priced from $102,800. The mighty 3.0-litre all-aluminium six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine pumps out a whopping 200kW at 4400rpm and 565Nm at 2000rpm.

BMW's range-topping X5 4.8is is due to arrive on sale Down Under in July as the successor to the 4.6is. It will also feature the facelifted X5's new AWD drivetrain and six-speed auto, plus 20-inch wheels!

Debuting at the 2003 Frankfurt motor show, the facelifted 2004 X5 goes on sale in Europe and Australia in January, 2004. Along with styling borrowed from its smaller X3 sibling – due on sale here in mid-2004 - the revised X5 gets a new 235kW V8 and new 150kW/480Nm turbo-diesel engine, from $84,000.
