Released: Feb 2013

The wagon version of BMW’s hugely successful sixth-generation 3 Series will arrive almost a year after its sedan sibling was released in Australia. The load-lugger is expected to be offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission and fewer variants than the 3 Series sedan. BMW claims the Touring will have improved dynamics and be 40kg lighter than the model it replaces.

Released: May 2012

BMW will introduce two entry-level versions of its volume-selling 3 Series sedan range - the $56,400 318d diesel and $57,600 320i petrol - to complement the existing three variant line-up.

Released: Mar 2012

Entry-level 318d and 320i variants of the new BMW 3 Series will go on sale in March, with first deliveries arriving from the South African factory by June. The 318d, powered by a 105kW/320Nm) turbo-diesel from the 1 Series consumes just 4.5L/100km while the 320i employs BMW's new N20 turbo four in 135kW/270Nm tune, returning 6.2L/100km.

Just 50 coupe and 50 convertible Pure M3s will come to Australia. There are no changes to the legendary 309kW/400Nm 4.0-litre V8 but gloss black 19-inch M double-spoke alloy wheels and gloss black air intake plus dark chrome grille, side gills and exhaust tips should heighten the Pure's appeal to performance enthusiasts.

Released: Aug 2010

A midlife makeover for BMW's mid-size two-door models will include more performance and efficiency – plus manual transmission with idle-stop – for the base 320d and greater flexibility from the new-look 335i M Sport's turbo six engine. Meanwhile, M3 models will also get idle-stop to reduce fuel consumption.

BMW Australia will soon widen the appeal of its new M3 coupe with the addition of the M3 convertible. Likely to carry a traditional price premium ($16,000 in E46 guise) over the new M3 coupe, it will come with the same 309kW 4.0-litre V8, mated to six-speed manual or M-DCT auto transmissions.

The first M3 sedan is likely to arrive in Australia by December 2008. Powered by the same 309kW 4.0-litre V8 as its coupe and cabriolet stablemates, the four-door M3 will compete head on with the likes of Mercedes-Benz's bruising new C63 AMG sedan and the Lexus IS-F sedan due here in October.

Released: Jun 2008

BMW is expected to debut its long-awaited M Double-Clutch Transmission (M-DCT) automated manual gearbox on its M3 Coupe by mid-2008. Quicker and more frugal than the manual, with claimed 0-100km/h acceleration dropping two-tenths, it also slashes average fuel consumption by half a litre per 100km.

BMW's next-gen M3 coupe, based on the all-new E92 3 Series Coupe on sale since October 2006, should appear globally by around Frankfurt motor show time 12 months later. Expect outputs of more than 300kW and 420Nm from a new 4.0-litre M5 V10-derived V8, to rival Audi's brilliant RS4.
